The common app says a teacher or counselor can submit recommendations offline, but it also says "The teacher and counselor recommendation process is to be completed either all online or all offline." If my teacher recs and the rest of my app is done online can the counselor one be done on paper?

Yes, that is exactly our D’s application situation. Everything is online other than the counselor forms. Her counselor has opted out and she is able to print the school forms. The only way to get access to those personalized printed forms is for the counselor to opt out of online submission. Then the application creates links to pdf forms that include the applicant name and common app ID, among other info.

One of my child’s teachers handed her the letter of recommendation. To generate the other required forms it was recommended elsewhere on CC that we invite the teacher through the common app but do not provide an e-mail address which would generate links to the other required form? Any idea if this would work? If so my child can bring the additional form to her teacher and then likely ask a counselor to mail in official school envelope. If this does not work it looks like we can ask the teacher to opt out of online submission and complete additional form. Trying to make this as easy as possible on the teacher. Thanks for your help.

Yes, that will work. One of DD’s recommenders did her LOR on-line and one did it off-line. She added both recommenders to the CA but did not provide an email address for the off-line recommender. Then when she assigned the off-line recommender to the particular college, it stated “offline” next to the off-line recommender’s name and then in the “assign recommenders” section, there was a link to the relevant form that one could print out and give to the off-line recommender. What DD’s school has the kids do is give each offline recommender a pre-addressed and stamped envelope for each college to which the off-line recommender is to supply his/her LOR and in each envelope, to place the copy of the downloaded rec form from the CA. This way, when you hand the off-line recommender the preaddressed, stamped envelope, it contains the relevant form. The person can fill out the form and insert it in the envelope along with the LOR and seal it and mail it. Or I suppose the recommender can seal the envelope and write his/her name across the seal on the back and hand it back to the student to mail.

PurplePlum,

Did you notice that the offline form is missing two columns on the Rating Table of the 2nd page on the offline recommendation form. It has no columns of “Outstanding (top 5%)” and “One of the top few encountered in my career”.

How do we contact CommonApp to have it fixed asap?

txhandan:

On the generic teacher rec form DD downloaded from the CA, all columns were there. If you are having problems, I would click on the CA help section and send them an email. Not sure why some columns are missing for you.

PurplePlum,

What I see on the downloaded form from CA, the Rating Table is stretched across the page and I do not see the following two columns “Outstanding (top 5%)” and “One of the top few encountered in my career”. The last column I see is “Excellent (top10%)”.

Can you check the form you have?

Thanks

I doubt this problem originated with common app. The problem may be with the program you are using to open/print the file. Try the free Adobe reader rather than whatever pdf viewer you are using.

I have acrobat reader and the two columns I mentioned does not appear on the screen at all.I have tried on both Windows and Mac with different browsers (Firefox, Chrom) and I have same problem.

I have created separate thread from the missing columns. Please provide your comments/help there.
