I started by getting a rec from my English teacher. That was fine.
But then I realized that I'm applying to Engineering programs, and therefore I should probably get a math/science teacher.
So I asked my calc/physics teacher (its a combined course) to write me a rec.
Then I realized that even though I had gotten an A or an A+ on each test, the class is first thing in the morning, so I'm not the most engaged person in the class, although I do wake up about mid-way through the period
So in a long discussion with my college counseler, she recommended getting another rec
And I asked my theatrical design teacher to write me yet another rec, because he has had me twice in a class (albeit an art class) and I talk to and see him almost every day because I'm super involved in backstage theatre work.

The school I'm applying to ED only wants one rec, and I'm giving them three.

Is this going to kill me here?

All the college admissions people I’ve talked too say that the recc.s should come from a teacher that can explain you the best, not necessarily a teacher of your subject of interest. One that can explain you’re attitude towards your work, your personality, etc.

If you’re getting an A/A+ in the class, the college is gonna know you’re very capable in those fields. You’re better off getting reccs from someone that you are very engaged with.

Thanks for the advice, but I’m still lost. The three different teachers already have the forms and have all written me a rec. I’m just afraid I’m overkilling on the recs and its going to hurt my chances of getting into my #1 school!

As long as they’re saying something different about you, I’m pretty sure that’s ok. Colleges just dont want to hear the same thing over and over, but it sounds like these teachers are all going to write about very different things

I highly doubt they’re going to reject you just because you sent in a few extra recs. The worst that can happen is perhaps that they won’t read them all…

You’re worried that they won’t want extra recs? Yeah, they probably don’t want 4.0s either.

I wondered why anyone would worry about this but then I noticed that you bumped your own thread in 12 minutes and then again in 7 minutes… you might need to relax if you’re going to get through the college application process!

I can’t say exactly how many times I heard it, but in visits to 18 colleges this past summer (with 18 info sessions and 18 tours), I repeatedly heard “we want 2 letters of recommendation. If you really want to, send three. No more, please.” Three is fine. No one wants to read any more than that. (I visited 3 Ivies and a bunch of other great schools.)
