I’ve managed to snag a “super” single at my new school, which means it has A/C and a private bath. Very nice, but the bathroom was filthy when I moved in. I want to clean it but don’t know what I’ll need. To all of those with private baths, what do you keep on hand to clean everything? Until now I’ve been in the communal bathroom which is kept up by the college, and now I’m pretty clueless.
The floor is my biggest issue, but I’m also worried about the possibility of mold in the shower.
Sweep the bathroom.
Get some yellow gloves, a sponge, and some mildew/mold spray from lysol and get rid of any places you think there’s mold.
Mop the floor (I use a Swiffer wet jet).
Wash the tub with one of those magic erasers from Mr Clean if you’ve got a tub. If not, just scrub and bubbles the whole shower.
You probably need to buy a toilet bowl brush, and get some toilet bowl cleaner. You squirt the cleaner in the bowl, let it sit a few minutes, then scrub with brush. Then flush and rinse the brush as you do that.
I like Lysol wipes for cleaning the rest of the toilet (seat, top, sides near bottom).
A sponge and some kind of bathroom cleaning spray is good for the sink & vanity, and can be used in the shower as well.
If the shower has a glass door, I’d get some window cleaner (Windex or equivalent) and spray/then clean with a soft cloth. You can keep the mirror and faucets clean with that, too.
I moved into an apartment recently where the shower area where the doors slid shut was full of black mold. I did some work with Lysol wipes, then daily I use a disposable glasses lens towel I had a box of to clean my glasses, then take s scrub at the icky trough before tossing it. I also used some qtips to get in the tough to reach spots. Gradually it has gotten cleaned up.
After every shower I wipe down the walls with a small towel, then spray the areas prone to mold & mildew with some Tilex.
Here’s a way to keep the shower from getting moldy and disgusting … first, clean it, then after every shower, take an old towel and quickly dry the walls, faucet handle, and then the floor. Hang the towel over the shower door to dry.
This literally takes 1 minute (you’ll get fast after a few times) and your shower will stay clean!
Clorox Toilet Wand (the nice thing about this product is that the little cleaning heads are disposable. You use the cleaning head once, toss in the trash, use a new one the next time, and there’s no mess) https://www.clorox.com/products/clorox-toiletwand-system/unscented/
If you don’t want to use the wand above, get Clorox Toilet Bowl Cleaner & buy a brush (get the Clorox brand cleaner, squeeze it all around so it covers the inside of the bowl, and let it set for 20-30 minutes if necessary, then scrub with brush) https://www.clorox.com/products/clorox-toilet-bowl-cleaner-with-bleach/rain-clean/
I recommend not even keeping ammonia around so that you don’t accidentslly mix it with a bleach product.
I like the Clorox toilet gel on the moldy shower caulk. Apply and let it sit. Definitely need ventilation. Give it a quick scrub and the caulk is sparkling white again. Don’t use it every day.
Love the Lysol wipes of quick clean ups. Microfiber cloths and the spray of your choice are a great choice, too.
@yourmomma Can I assume you don’t clean the bathrooms where you live? I was a hotel maid one summer in college, so definitely got practice then. I’ve had cleaning help when my kids were little and I worked full time. But most people really have to do it themselves. I taught my kids before they went to college (they had to clean the bathroom they shared at home). Good for the OP to reach out and figure out how to do it.
OP, one more piece of info. The inner shower curtain gets moldy sometimes if you have a shower with a curtain. You can wash it (Google for instructions) or buy a new one pretty inexpensively. Be sure to pull it away from the side of the tub after showering and sort of separate the folds to help it dry without developing more mold.
Great suggestions here. My bathroom routine is Clorox toilet gel for the toilet, wipes (or Windex and paper towels) for the toilet seat/tank/handle and the counter, a mop and Pine Sol for the floor (and a bucket) SoftScrub and paper towels for the sink, and Tilex for the shower. Tilex is strong and stinky…but it works the best on mold. Spray, ventilate, leave, and rinse later. Don’t do all of these at once; it will be too smelly!
This is basic, but if your bathroom has a fan, run it while you shower. I leave mine running until I’m ready to leave for work after showering in the morning to get as much moisture out as possible.
I used to love the Kaboom bathroom product that sprayed on blue and when it was white it was time to wipe it off. Got soapy gunk off tile or acrylic or porcelain! Wonder why they stopped making it?
