Can anyone offer recommendations or a resource that rates and describes the several freshman dorms at NYU? Our son is enrolling in Tisch next fall and needs to apply for housing this month. Not from NY so a little uncertain as to the housing locations, preferences, etc. Thanks!

Try and get a dorm closest to campus if you can. I lived in Ruben which had a great location and then got my own apartment right near Washington Square Park.

Thanks for that tip, Lilly. We will look at Rubin. Understand Hayden is close in, too.

I found this site: http://nyuhousing.wikispaces.com/Brittany

And this one: http://nyunews.com/housingguide/

Those web sites are just what we were looking for. Many thanks!

I lived in Hayden freshman year. Location can’t be beat as far as freshman housing is concerned (one of 3 freshman dorms where you can roll out of bed 10 minutes before class, shower, walk out the door, and still get to class reasonably on time). But I’d put a higher likelyhood in your son getting into Harvard than getting into Hayden, a lot of ED kids choose it. And they choose housing in march and most definitely have priority.

Third north is the only apartment style dorm with full kitchens but the bedrooms are TINY. Think 10x14 or so, with 2 twin beds, 2 desks, 2 drawers and a space that barely qualifies as a closet.

I’ve never been to Founder’s Hall but I hear it’s actually really nice.

Sophomore year try for the Union Square dorms, or if you can afford it, Alumni. The place is all singles and the location is absolutely amazing.

Junior year on, move off campus. They screw you over for housing junior year, so you’re better off moving off campus (you’ll probably end up in Chinatown-yuck), and if this recession lasts any longer, it might end up becoming cheaper to live off campus.
