Hello
I’m taking my son to visit Tulane the beginning July he is interested in the Neuroscience program. He is kind of excited because he said he wants to hear blues music. Who knew! LOL!! We are staying in the French Quarter. What are some fun things we can do while there so that he can see what the area is like or has to offer. We arrive on a Monday around 11am and depart on Tuesday at 6pm. Our tour is on Tuesday morning.
Thanks so much!
@Kona2012 Go through the Tulane forum and look for posts related to Honors Weekend, Destination Tulane or that have a title related to New Orleans activities. There have been several threads in the past couple of months on this topic that have pretty good recs.
Also, just an FYI…you can find Blues in New Orleans, but it is not the predominant local genre. Memphis is really the city for Blues. But there is plenty of good music to be found in New Orleans (jazz, trad jazz, dixieland jazz, brass bands, funk, hip hop, cajun and zydeco, etc… Not as much in the French Quarter (with a couple of exceptions) but Frenchmen street in the Faubourg Marigny adjacent to the French Quarter is really local music central. Do some research ahead of time to see who is playing where…sample some of their music online to see who he may be interested in…and catch a show or two. Check out the Offbeat Magazine website for the music schedule for the entire city. Great resource.
As they say at Pat O’Brien’s…Have Fun!
New Orleans is more known for Jazz than Blues. Check out Preservation Hall one night for sure. People line up early to get in, there are only a few seats the rest is standing room only. I would spend Monday in the quarter, have lunch and dinner there. (So.many.places). Walk around and visit Jackson Square, stroll the shops and galleries on Royal St., ge beignets at Cafe DuMonde. Be prepared for sweltering heat but bring a sweater because all of the restaurants will have the a/c on high blast! There are plenty of tours to take if you are interested- French Quarter tours, Cemetery tours, ghost tours. Frenchman St. is right outside the quarter and has a bunch of music venues. Most of them will be 21+ however but you can walk around and listen from the street. On Tuesday I would recommend staying uptown after your tour and check out the areas around Tulane where students spend more time. Walk to the back of Audubon Park and check out The Fly, stroll down Magazine Street for lunch and shopping/browsing. Oak Street is another area close to Tulane with cafes and shops. There are many posts on here recommending activities and restaurants! Have a great time!
