From W&L/Lexington "vets" ... can you recommend the best, neatest place to stay in Lexington? or in the general Lexington area?

how far do you want to drive? it might be worth it to do so.
Homestead or Greenbrier if you want something neat but at least an hour and half on one.
the holiday inn express is the four star hotel of Lexington. perhaps they will leave a plastic duck in your bathroom.:)

The Hampton Inn Col Alto is the best, and the only place that is easy to walk to (sidewalks end before you reach anywhere else). Otherwise there are plenty of decent middling-quality hotels within a short drive to the north (and one each to the west and south)

Any cool b & b's?

Col Alto is amazing.

Sorry, but can you clarify re: Col Alto? Thanks

Sorry, the Hampton Inn Col Alto that was mentioned before. We stayed there when I visited. It's built into a large old-fashioned mansion and there's a large yard on the grounds surrounding it.

If you're feeling adventurous they have 8 or 10 rooms that are set like they would have looked in the mid 1800s, very interesting rooms. If not they have normal rooms, and that would be where we stayed.

It is the Hampton Inn right near campus. But don't let the name fool ya! We stayed there this past week. It is on the Natl Register of Historic Places. The old rooms in the main inn are more expensive; we stayed in the brick "newer" back part and it was really nice. Walk to campus if you want. Walk to main street where there are all sorts of great restaurants.

But no matter what the desk lady said, the Southern Inn is not a "casual" restaurant. Avoid it if your in t-shirt and shorts. There is a sandwich place with an Irish name that is a winner. Good food, reasonable price.

While you're there you ought to see the Stonewall Jackson House, the cemetary, and the V.M.I. chapel/museum. If you get a chance driving out to New Market, PA and see the Civil War battlefield, and the "Hall of Valor Museum" is worth it. However, if you ask the desk lady at Col Alto, even if she says it takes 45 minutes, it will be more than an hour.

All of this from experience.
