recommendations on local hotels

You guys helped me before, so I came back for more help! I want to make reservations for move-in, family weekend, etc. and everyone I speak to suggest staying at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel. What if that hotel is not available, what would be some other suggestions of local hotels???? Thanks so much!

I have also stayed in the Genessee Grande which is also in walking distance to the campus. Request the separate building- the rooms are nicer there. Both the Genesee and the Sheraton raise their rates greatly for these special weekends - and you have to cancel by early August if you want refund. This past year, we stayed at the Best Western (about 10 minutes away) for family weekend and it was just fine - and about a third of what these other hotels cost. I know someone who stayed at the Jefferson Clinton and liked it. The convenience of the Sheraton is nice - and if you do stay there, make sure you become a Starwood member - the points do rack up quickly.

Do not stay at the Comfort Inn on Carrier Circle! We just returned from graduation weekend. It took me 10 minutes to find someone to get another roll of toilet paper for two of our three rooms. They hadn’t replaced it when it ran low. Many of the rooms are handicap-accessible, but that means hand-held shower heads (our’s broke and hung in the tub). Not a great experience. And yes, they raise the rates everywhere for move in and graduation. We loved the Genesee Grande, not the separate section. It is older but has more character. And a very nice dining room. Also stayed out near the airport, but I don’t remember the name of the hotel.

We have stayed at both the Courtyard and Residence Inn at Carrier Circle; both fine…

HATED the Renaissance near campus; right on the highway…soooo noisy…

Jefferson Clinton is very nice as well (but not worth it, imo, for move in)…

You can’t beat the Sheraton for the convenience. Price per night basically doubles for Syracuse Univ. special events i.e. move-in, Family Weekend, etc. They actually do a SU lottery for particular weekends, due to the demand. A friend of ours just recently stayed at the Renaissance and said it was great; in fact, all the rooms have been recently renovated. I was also told that the Genessee Grand is a good one to stay at. Prices increase at all the hotels when special events are happening at SU campus.

Thank you for all of your help, everyone! I am going to try to call this weekend for reservations for the fall.
Threekids…Congratulations to your graduate!!

shorething…you were right when you said, “Prices increase at all the hotels when special events are happening at SU campus.”

I know rates go up alot doing prime weeks, but I went to the embassy suites when I went up in October and it was great!

For Freshman move in and family weekend (3 years ago) we stayed at the Hampton Inn North (became Hilton members and started getting points). On non event visits we have stayed at the Renaissance and paid quite a bit less through Priceline ($65 last October one week before Parent’s Weekend- the hotel was empty).

We usually stay a few miles away from campus. Rates are much better and they don’t have such unreasonable requirements such as minimum stay, charging your card immediately and strict cancellation policy. Try the Hampton Inn, Carrier Circle, Airport or new Erie Blvd. locations. You get a much better rate, a quick breakfast in the am and it is only a 10 minute drive away

Thanks for all of the help!!!
