Recommendations past deadline

I received one absolutely wonderful letter of recommendation from my English teacher. For my second letter of recommendation I asked a man whose credentials speak for themselves (college professor, business liaison, etc.), which is great... if he'd only respond to my emails and turn in the letter on time! I asked him weeks ago and he adamantly said yes, on the common app it says that his letter has been "started" but I have not been able to get a hold of him (most likely because of the holidays) and I fear he might not be able to get it in by January 1st. I have another recommender lined up, but I already submitted many applications using his letter of recommendation.

My main questions are: is he able to submit his letter after the deadline? And is there a way to change the recommender after submitting the application (but not the letter of rec)?

Thank you!

scant42 - My son is in the same boat. A teacher (my son’s AP Chem & CC coach) committed to write a letter in September. STILL hasn’t written it, despite regular reminders. He says “I’m on it, I’ll do it right now. No worries”… and then he doesn’t do it. We are on break until the 5th and my son has three apps due on the 1st. I’m going to contact schools to see what they say (he would do it, but he’s out of town) and try to find a back-up for him on short notice. Best of luck to you.

Recommendations can be sent after the deadline, along with SAT scores.
