this is probably a stupid question…
nearly all colleges want recommendations, right? like 2 or so? well, if you apply to 7 or 8 schools, how can you possibly get that many? i definitely don’t know that many teachers well enough for that. can you just send the same exact rec to more than one school? i have a feeling they wouldn’t let you, if that’s the case, why not?

sweatie... yes of course you send in the same rec for each school you apply too... unless your like applying for a physics major at one school and like an english major at another (in that case i would have you physics teacher write a rec for one school and have your english teacher write a rec for the other school.) What YOU need to do is find out what type of reccomendation letter each college wants. Some want a written letter any format, others go by common app's and some go by their own wacky style.

Remember take a deep breath... everything with work out ;-)

Good luck!!!

Personally, I don't know anyone who asked 7-8 different teachers for recs. I think most people go to 2-3 teachers who they have good relationships with, or know them well, and they do the recs for the schools you're applying to. Most of the time the teachers do send the same recs to different schools they just changes the name & stuff(hopefully!).

My 2 cents: Just make sure you ask for recs as EARLY as possible, especially if you are applying to several schools. If you can, try to get them before Thanksgiving break! It gets crazy after that!

Also some other advice is to ask once. That is, put together your list of colleges far enough in advance so that you can go to a teacher and ask them to write a rec for the colleges on your list. Teachers hate it when you ask for a few recs, then a week later want a couple more, and 2 weeks later are back again.

Make sure your teachers send the rec's. My teacher failed to do so.

When you ask for references, teachers greatly appreciate it when kids attach typed reasons they feel each separate school has "match" qualities so they can personalize some. Go to the trouble of making clear concise paragraphs on why each of your schools would be a fit for you, and give specifics. There is no one perfect School and they understand this, but you need to make sense of things to gain their respect. Also, do your Activity Sheet in advance, even though it may be unfinished, and attach it.

If there is a teacher who has complimented you, don't be too shy to quote the compliment and remind them of it so they can be specific. It might even help to include a xerox of related paper or project as you can't expect a teacher to hunt for your work samples. If you have made visits or contacts at a prospective college...give pertinent details to your references. That means getting in your college visits early enough to not be tardy in your Teacher Reference requests if possible.

best!

This might be thinking a little too far ahead, but my APUSH teacher last year told us that if we wanted recs, we might want to ask her before school let out so she could work on them over the summer - she gets busy in the fall and she really wanted to put her time into them.

You might want to at least think about what teachers you'd ask, and possibly approach them and ask when they'd prefer to write a rec - over the summer or earlier in the fall.

If you applied to mutiple schools and they each require teacher recs in a certain format, how would you go about doing that? Do your just tell teacher to write something general and not college specific and simply copy and paste?

No caught and pasting, it can be "to whom it may concern" type of letter
