Recommendations

I sent one counselor recommendation and 4 teacher recommendations.

The last was from my Basketball coach of 4 years who said that he wrote me a really good one and emphasized not only athletic prowess but also leadership and diligence (captain for 3 years)

Was I allowed to send in the coachs rec? On the Columbia website it says the two teacher recs must come from academic teachers- does that apply to the extras?

And how important are the requirements for classes?

Collegeboard reports that Columbia requires 4 years of foreign language. I only took 3. problem?

My understanding is that it would be permitted. So long as you meet their requirements for teacher recommendations, everything extra is just that.

Also, I only have 3 foreign language classes under my belt (due to scheduling policy at my school) but I have enrolled in a fourth for the spring semester. If you only have 3 because of scheduling, I’m sure they will excuse that. However, if you can take that fourth, I would. (You have to take 4 for the Core, so it’ll help later)

they don’t require anything. they recommend 3 or 4 years. you’re fine. i took 3 years of foreign language. also, 4’s a lot of recs. don’t mean to put you down, but kinda overdoing it there, especially since columbia emphasizes that they don’t want extra recs. either way, as long as you have 2 academic recs, it’s okay to have one by a coach.

crap i thought i was overdoing it.
do you think it would hurt me?
the way i saw it though was that if anything they just wont read one or two of them… i doubt theyd see it as a bad thing- more likely theyd see me as eager?

wow i just read some info on the website.
one of my supplementary recommenders is a college professor- supposedly that isnt a problem.
im scared this will hurt me now…

nah, i definitely wouldn’t worry about it. it’s not going to hurt you. think about it, their admissions decision wouldn’t be drastically affected just because you sent an extra rec. Their admission decision wouldn’t be drastically affected even if you made a larger mistake; if they want you, they’ll take you.

I’m sure you got those extra recs because of legit reasons (a perspective from your coach as a leader; whoever else you had write your other one). As long as they talk about other strengths they’re perfectly appropriate. The reasons they don’t like extra ones is because they get so many damn applications, each with sets of essays, recs, and other long things they have to read, that it gets out of hand to have 20,000 people sending them all that crap.

I was accepted, and i sent one extra rec from my music teacher, which I thought necessary because he could detail other aspects that my academic teachers couldn’t (otherwise I wouldn’t have sent it). so anyway don’t worry

thanks!
i feel a bit better now cause both my extra recs are from different areas.
hope they read them haha.

In my opinion, “less is more” like I personally think if you send in too many recs, it might show colleges that you weren’t very confident with the 2 that you were suppose to send. But if you think the extra ones will really help you out a bit and offer a unique perspective on your character or something, that may be okay

GL

thank you!
even if i were to reconsider theres nothing i can do about it now haha…
