The recommendations we need for Cornell are the ones available through the common app exclusively? And what is the limit for # of recs?

It’s 2 teachers rec and 1 GC rec. Teachers rec should be from 11th and 12th grade teachers.

I’m a transfer student so I’m guessing that it can be any of my college teachers?

Btw, if my sch does not have a gc, then do I send like 3 teacher recs? Or do I have a choice on the third? And is the 3rd necessary in the first place.
Also, can I send an additional rec, from teacher in charge of my volunteer work at an organization in my 10th grade? Thanks!

Those recommendations do not need to be from strictly 11th and 12th grade teachers.
I sent in a recommendation from my 9th grade teacher and was accepted, so there’s your proof. As for the GC recommendation, I don’t know.

Cornell may not be as strict as other colleges, but most schools want recs from 11th or 12th grade teachers. In order not to have to ask more than 2 teachers for recs, it is just easier to follow the strictest guideline. If it’s possible, it’s good to get a rec from a humanities teacher and one from a math/science teacher.

You will need a letter(a form) from a GC, homeroom teacher, principal, or an advisor. He or she will indicate if you have taken the most rigorous courses, how you are compared to other students over all. This cannot be substituted by another teacher’s rec. If you don’t have a GC, then ask the principal, dean of students, advisor…to fill out that form.

Many top tier schools only want you to submit what is required, they do not want an applicant to send in any unnecessary information. Yale comes flat out to say do not send in any art supplement unless you are outstanding of what you do. Princeton says when you send in a dance video, show them exactly what they are asking for, no more, no less.

Bump! I’m applying as a transfer in the spring. I spoke with the admissions for CALS who informed me that my current employer can write me a recommendation; however, they did not specify the process in which I include that in my application.

Does the common app have a place for that or do I need a copy from my employer? Anyone have any experience with this? Thank you.

An employer and one of my coaches sent recommendations outside of the Common App – these were in addition to those submitted with the Common App – directly to the admissions office. I had given them my social security number, and the Common App application number (I think there was some sort of identifying number on the application, can’t remember) to note somewhere on the recommendations, and addressed envelopes with the Admissions office info for them.

kibt - did your employer recommendation address Cornell specifically or did it have a generic “To Admissions” title?

I’m pretty sure they were generic because they were sent to other schools as well.
