Recommendations?

I have to move to a different state for my senior year and I'm probably going to school online. If it makes a difference, it's due to the fact my mom was diagnosed with a chronic illness and I'm moving with her to help her through her treatment. I have an excellent reputation with my counselor and teachers at my current school. Can I just get my recommendations from my counselor and teachers before I leave or do I have to get them from staff at my new school? Even if it's normally not done could I just explain my circumstances to colleges?

most people get their college recs from their junior year teachers, so i think its perfectly fine if you get them from your current school (especially since you’re taking online school)
colleges would definately understand the circumstances and the fact that you have more important things to worry about than recs, but i’d reccomend asking your junior teachers.

also, i hope things get better with your mom as soon as possible!

If I were you, I would contact my junior-year teachers right away.

If I were you, I would also use the “any additional information” space on applications to explain why I had moved to online school and solicited recommendations from teachers in my previous school. It’s a very reasonable response to circumstances utterly beyond your control.

I, too, wish you and your mom the best.

Thank you both for your well wishes and responses. I’m going to ask my teachers as soon as I can, but can I get my current counselor to fill out my forms too? My counselor and I are very well acquainted and I feel her recommendation would be infinitely better than the one my next counselor would write. As long as she agrees and I explain why I did that, would there be any issues with colleges?

She probably can’t do that. I’ll admit I don’t actually know, but I’d be very surprised if your old school, your new online school and the colleges you were applying to would all permit it.

In that case, is there any way I could submit my current transcripts from my large school in addition with my transcripts from my online school? I’m just wondering because I’m in the top five at my large school of 700 something students in each graduating class, and there’s only thirty something kids at my next school (I’m basically guaranteed the number one spot here, but it’s kind of different being 1/30 compared to 5/700). Basically I just want to show I was a competitive student at my last school before circumstances forced me to transfer. If I can’t do this, is there any way to explain this to colleges? And sorry if I sound overly anal, it’s just that I’m still planning on applying to competitive colleges and I want to make sure I have the best chance possible.
