How many recommendations does NYU require?

1 teacher and 1 counselor

I have a question about that. By recommendation from counselor, do they mean that they just want you to fill out the forms, or also get an additional separate recommendation letter?

for the common app, there is a sheet you need to give to your counselor and one to your teacher (they look different). give the appropriate one to your counselor and she/he should know what to do.

from what i saw, my counselor supposedly had a letter written up about me so i'm thinking that there is supposed to be a counselor letter too. it may be different per school, i'm not sure, but just leave it up to your counselor =)

Only get one recommendation from one teacher (any subject) and one recommendation from your high school's college/guidance counselor. NYU only wants two recs. When I went to an open house, the admissions officer was adament about only TWO recommendations. She said that any extras that are sent (more than one teacher, coach, boss, peer, etc.) will be disregarded and not considered in the admissions process. I don't know why this is complicated; it's very clearly stated on the website.

so if you send two teacher recs at the same time, they're gonna discard one of them? What if they discard the better one of the two? NOOOOOOOOOoooooooo!!!!..................

They don't always disregard them, they just don't guarantee that they will be read. Probably depends on how big the applicant pool is, and if they need to hear more about the kid, etc..

hmm. would it hurt to send the 2nd teacher recommendation?

Read their instructions and follow the directions. It is not complicated. When they say to send ONE teacher rec. and ONE counselor rec., send only what they ask for. They won't read your second teacher rec, so don't send it.
