<p>I know for a fact that CMU requires 2 teacher recs. But do they necessarily have to be from a teacher from school? Can one be from <em>for example</em> a tutor that I've known for a long time?</p>
<p>You probably wouldn't want it to be, it's more than a letter, they usually also ask the teacher to check off various boxes about how you compare to other kids in the school. and what you are like in a classroom setting.</p>

<p>HyunwooP is right on. Only one teacher rec required. Something to ponder: at a CMU info session on Monday, the admissions rep said that if you are a techno-geek/math type, you may want to provide a humanities teacher rec to highlight a different side of you.</p>
