Hey everyone!

I am going to start asking teachers for recommendations within the next week now that I am at the end of my junior year. Originally, I was going to ask my French teacher and my Chemistry teacher for recommendations but now my friends are telling me I should go to my English teacher since I want to go into theatre and that I shouldn't go to my chem teacher unless I want to go into a science field. I really don't want to ask my English teacher since although I do well in her class she doesn't really know much about me and I am very quiet in that class due to the people in it. Is it really that highly recommended for me to go to an English teacher rather than my chem teacher? Help please!

It is MUCH more important that the academic teachers who write your recs know you WELL than which subjects they teach. It need not be English at all! They are not writing about your command of science but more about you as a student. Go with your Chem teacher, not your English teacher.

Thank you so much! That is what I thought but others kept telling me differently.

I also think you should send one or two artistic recommendations, though not required. These would be supplemental and in addition to the required academic core teacher recs.

My D did the same thing as you last year at the end of her junior year. She asked her history teacher because she had him for a year at the middle school before he moved to the high school. Then she had him for 2 AP history classes so he knew her very well. She also asked her math teacher because she had her for 2 years and she also knew D well.

As soozievt suggested my D also had two artistic recommendations.

You should double check what the school’s you are applying to require. If I recall, some schools do require the letter come from an English teacher or someone who has observed you in the theatre arts. Some also require that one of the letters comes from the counselor.
