I need to satisfy the second part of the Reading & Composition requirement for the College of Engineering this Fall. I was just wondering if anyone has a particular class that they'd recommend taking (I know these topics have come up in the past, but I'm curious to hear from people who are taking or took such classes last semester)? I'm looking for pretty much what everybody else is looking for -- easy grading with the least amount of writing possible (I'd prefer multiple short essays over fewer but longer essays; I'd like to keep it under 5 pages for all essays, if possible).

im doing a rhetoric class in freshman summer session

I am in L&S and am immune to R&C. I've heard the L&S R44 is good because it has no research paper.

I read that the rhetoric classes are actually kind of difficult here, so I don't think I want to take one...

rhetoric is hard

luckily im taking it for credit no credit

most essays will be at least 5 pages - that's what it was for me in both R1A and R1B. i'd recommend anything NOT in the english, rhetoric, or comp lit departments as easier and less rigorous.

I highly recommend South Asian R5B. They're generally taught by graduate students, and some of them hand out the easiest grades I've ever seen, i.e. class means of 3.8-3.9. Check Pick-A-Prof. Not to mention that the material is quite interesting if you're into Hinduism and Indian culture in general.

Better pick quick. Most of those classes are already full. Plug in R4B to find alternative R1B courses.

I hear good things about the german and scandinavian departments for the R&C req.

German is sooooo easy! At least the R5A class I took was. According to online rating sites 93% receive A's in the class. Registration is really hard since most people sign-up during Phase I of telebears and spots go fast.

FYI German R5B is not offered in the Fall and only during Spring and Summer.

southasian r5b is hit or miss, my professor has us write alot of papers and another friend of mine had a professor that had a cap on A's. other people have a good time so just to reiterate...very important to get a particular professor for r/c classes

That's why you look for the "easy" instructors on Pick-A-Prof.

I'd prefer to be able to take the course over the summer, so my options are:

HISTORY OF ART R1B
ITALIAN STUDIES R5B
NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES R1B
SCANDINAVIAN R5B
SOUTH ASIAN R5B

I was thinking South Asian because it's available at a good time, but there isn't much information about the instructor online (nothing at ratemyprofessors.com). I'd go with German R5B naturally (I took R5A last semester and found it easy), but the class is full and has 2 people already on the waitlist :(

i'm taking history of art r1b this summer, haha.

Who are you taking it with and why did you choose to take that particular course?

I'm taking it with Lyon from 2-4 pm during 07/07-08/15/08. I chose it because of the course description (sounds interesting to me).

Description: How do mechanisms of perception structure responses to visual art? What is at stake when words describe images? By means of intensive looking, thinking, speaking, and writing, this course introduces the student to a series of problems and issues in the description and analysis of works of art. Because the course is also an introduction to the historical study of art, it is intended for students with no previous course work in the field. Satisfies the second half of the Reading and Composition requirement.

I'm also taking Math 54... haha, there goes my summer.
