Recommended Courses: First-Year Biology Major

Hi everyone!

Last I posted on here, I had just committed to UCLA as a Biology major. My summer has been very busy so far with preparations, especially when it comes to choosing classes. I’m hoping to start my freshman year strong, but I don’t want to overwhelm myself in the first quarter with all the hardest classes - however, I don’t want to “take it easy” either. While I still have a lot of research ahead of me, I was wondering if former/current students have any experiences they’d like to share about classes. For example, if you feel strongly about taking/not taking any particular class(es), or have any insights into programs like the Honors Program (which I’ve enrolled in), Clusters, and Fiat Lux, please feel free to share your thoughts in this thread. Thanks for reading this, and I hope you all have a great day!

Orientation is right around the corner and they will advise you one on one what to take so no need to do it now! Personally I advise against fiat lux, clusters, and the honors program. It is just unnecessary extra work.

@10s4life Thanks for your reply! I’m glad to know that I don’t have to figure out the whole schedule now. I just got a class list from UCLA and it’s pretty overwhelming trying to sort out which ones to take first quarter. I’ve heard that, in the past, honors has been a lot of extra work. However, I was invited to what is basically the “new and improved” honors program, so I’m hopeful that it’ll be an improvement on the original. Thanks again for your advice!
