Recommended HS courses

On MITs site, they recommend students to take 2 years of a foreign language in high school. I've already completed one year of foreign language in my HS, and they haven't programmed me to be in any foreign language class for this year(junior year.) My previous spanish teacher said that we take only 1 year of spanish, pass the class, and we are done with foreign language for the rest of high school. Thus I will have only 1 year of high school foreign language. Does this mean that MIT will not consider me if I apply?

No, hence it being recommended and not required.

I have 8 language credits. Just saying… :)

MIT seems pretty flexible about its recommended high school courses. I don’t think they’d reject you just for not having taken two years of a foreign language. If you’re stressing over it, though, you could show some serious initiative by taking a college course or self-studying the language AP. =)

@Roarman, there are many selective universities with great science and engineering programs that require at least 2 years of a foreign language. MIT doesn’t require this, but since it’s so difficult to gain admission to MIT, I’m puzzled about why you’d want to restrict your chances to apply to other selective schools by taking only 1 year of foreign language.

So am I. And a lot of schools recommend or require three years, even.

What is this “they haven’t programmed me”? Do you not get input into your own class schedule?

If necessary, you don’t have to wait for your high school to teach you things. There are many resources to learn from outside of school. Just document your mastery with outside transcripts, or SAT II results, or AP test results, or by using the knowledge credibly.

Your school does not seem to be giving very good advice. I would question what else they are telling you. It sounds like thmay be saying the minimum required to graduate from High School, not the minimum that is required to be accepted into college.
