Recommended Local Hotels

Which hotels on/near campus are considered most convenient, reasonably priced, well-located, etc. for parents/families?

We are staying here…Howard Johnson Express Inn - Blackwood, 832 N Black Horse Pk
Blackwood, NJ 08012 US…in April for Penn Preview Day…$51 per night. I can’t afford the suggested hotels closer to campus. This one is about 15-20 minutes off campus w/free breakfast. We are hoping that the 3 visits this year…Penn Preview Day, Moving in, Family Weekend…will yield a hotel that we can stay at each year. Reviews on this place are mixed depending on the site…but when we were in the Philly area in 08 for the gymnastics olympic trials we stayed in a place with similar reviews and it was fine. Nothing fancy but safe and clean. I found it on wyndhamrewards.com…there were many within 15-20 minutes from campus

I am a current Penn parent, both of my children went to Penn, so many visits over the past 6 years. Our first visit, we stayed at the Sheraton adjacent to campus for NSO. Very convenient, but very expensive. Since then, I make a free reservation with a AAA discount on Marriott’s website. They have three properties (Residence, Courtyard and Marriott) surrounding City Hall and right across the street from the subway line or you can take a taxi to campus if you don’t have a car with you. A few days before arriving, I go on priceline.com and name my own price. First I put in the location of University Area, put in 3 1/2 stars and then start at $60, if it doesn’t come back with an offer, I add Downtown Philadelphia. I have stayed at the Club Quarters once and the rest of the time at the Downtown Marriott for $60. Then I go on the Marriott website and cancel my room reservation. A fellow parent has had success putting in Downtown Philly, 4 stars and $75 and has gotten rooms at Rittenhouse Square and the Ritz. Downtown Philly is easy to navigate because it is on the grid system. I just come from town on Walnut and park in the garage at 38th and Walnut across from the Huntsman (Wharton) building. Hope this helps.
