so on the williams website it says: "We do not currently recommend Vista on the Williams network. Our Novell Netware file space is not accessible with it. We strongly recommend coming with Windows XP and upgrading to Vista (if so desired) next year - the upgrade options from XP Pro to Vista are fairly inexpensive."

zr1990 - Are you an incoming Williams freshman? If so, you can purchase a computer through this link that will be configured with xp instead of Vista. If you don't want to do that, you can probably email the tech folks at Williams to get their advice. My son had a question for them, and they responded very promptly and helpfully.

vista works fine on the williams network; plenty of people use it with no problems. the only issue is that you have to jump through a few extra hoops to connect to campus file servers (which aren't really necessary anyway; it's just a convenience if you want to store files on the network and access them from anywhere). it's still possible, it just doesn't work quite as smoothly as it does with the novell client for xp.

of course, lots of people prefer xp to vista on its own merits.
