Recommended schedule for a freshman thinking of going pre-med?

Any advice as how I should plan out my schedule/course selection? I'm a freshman in CAS, so I know that one of my courses will be taken up by FWS, and I plan on taking Biology and/or Organic Chemistry my first year.

I'm currently taking BC calculus in high school, but I heard that most med schools want you to have college level math, so should I just not take the AP test for it? I'm guessing I might as well just take calc I and calc II to fulfill my math requirements.

Thanks for any advice or input. Greatly appreciated.

Why do you wana take orgo your first year? Keep in mind that is very unusual and it tends to be extremely difficult… but if you have a good background in chem go for it… its not unheard of…

here is what a lot of ppl recommend

English (FWS) -3
Math Calc 1 or another math if you can place out of it-4
Bio-4
Chem-4
PE-1

Second semester: same but with the next lvl of each course

Then soph year u can take orgo with lab and physics and you can be done wit ur premed reqs!

Thank you so much for replying. Would that kind of schedule be manageable for a freshman in CAS? It seems really science/math-based.

I know that I also have other requirements to fulfill for my degree…like foreign language and the social sciences. How would I be able to fit in those courses?

[Cornell Biology :: Sample Freshman Schedules](<a href=“Biological Sciences | CALS”>Biological Sciences | CALS)

Take a look at that site. The first sample is pretty much what I gave you. I think its definitely doable for a freshmen in CAS. You’re right it is science/math-based but only the first year in order to get your premed reqs out of the way. This will allow you to take your MCATs earlier.

As for your other reqs like foreign lang and stuff you could them your spring semester if you wanted, but it looks like you would focus on those your sophomore year. I’m not entirely sure. But as soon as you arrive to Cornell you will be matched up with an advisor and he/she will help you create your 8 semester plan. You can add/drop courses relatively easily.

and if ur majoring in bio alot of the premed reqs will overlap and you’ll have more room for other stuff…

you should definitely take the AP calculus exam! you are allowed to take Calc I or Calc II even if you could have chosen to use AP credit for them. if for some reason you end up really wanting to have that AP credit, you don’t want to have skipped the exam for no good reason.

It appears that Foreign language requirements are 11 Cornell credits- that translates to 3 courses or so. I dont see how the above schedules allow for this in the first two years.

It’s not very hard to satisfy all of the requirements.

You should take some type of 100 or 200 level bio and gen chem your freshman year. I would also advise taking calculus (you can take Calc I and II if you want to be conservative; or take Calc III like I did). FWS are obviously a must. You can take an additional elective course if you want. You can take a foreign language class or another class of your choosing. If you take a placement test (which is what I did), you can directly test into a 200 level foreign language class and satisfy the foreign language requirements with just that class.

So, my first semester schedule was:
Intro bio
Gen chem honors
Calc III
Spanish 209

My second semester schedule was:
Intro bio
Gen chem honors
FWS
Anthropology

I had English AP credit so I only needed 1 FWS.

is it possible for an engineer to complete all premed reqs before the end of sophmore year?
