I was thinking about going to one of these two colleges next year and while I am going to visit these schools...I want to know your experience of these two. I heard in Suny Albany while its a party school its more serious in schooling, while oneonta has a better campus it is just a party school. What do you guys think of the two? If there is any other schools that are better upstate...perfer not to go too up north like buffalo or so?...thinking towards albany a lot thou.

Both schools are good. Partying is everywhere you decide if, when & how much. Do you want large: Albany or small Oneonta. Which school has courses in the area you think your interested in, check out their web sites. Suny New Platz also a good school closer down state. I know a couple of Oneonta grads doing well & a friend son’s just transferred to U Albany from a small private college & loves it. Once you visit you’ll have better feel for things.

much thanks for the advice…ill keep what u said in mind

Definitely visit.

By the way, Albany is a major party school as well…it’s just a lot bigger than Oneonta so it’s not as noticeable.

My uncle works at Oneonta and he tried to convince me to go there. I didn’t…but they don’t have my major, and that’s why.

I would go to Albany

Yah ima look into both colleges cause, but right now my mind is set in going to albany…im majorin in buisness admin and heard that albany is great for that.

Both solid, not great schools. I would go to Oneonta every time though, given the same financial situation and that they both had my major. The reason is that Oneonta will give more of the prototypical rural, liberal arts type of feel and I’m into that. This, coming from an Oswego alumni who went to grad school in a big city (Tampa). There is nothing quite like the Northeast small-mid sized college experience :)

Carlos, you’re right. If your interest is business then UAlbany is your best choice.

Do you have quantifiable proof that Albany Business is better than Oneonta?

I would go w/ Oneonta. Albany is AACSB accredited, but Oneonta is in the process of getting it. Oneonta is not too small or large w/ just under 6000 students. Classes will be small and you can get to know your professors if you want. It also has many very high placed grads. (If you went to Bloomberg.com today, you would have seen one of them being quoted --also a video of him. Can still see the video. His last name is Yamarone.)

Oneonta is called a party school but Albany always makes the list of top party schools. Oneonta does not. Oneonta is not a bigger party school than Albany.

I think you can get a great education at either school. But Oneonta is more personal, has a much better looking campus and is highly ranked–for a SUNY.

I’m not sure why the whole “party school” persona is a major factor in the decision process anyway. If you don’t want to drink, don’t. If you do- then having a party atmosphere will only enhance your college experience.

you are going to find parties at every school (unless you go to a BYU type school). Clemson is not known as a huge party school but believe me, parties are a big part of the social life here

Yah guys lol im not going to pick a school just cause of the parties cause every school upstate is for partying, which what I want :). Like what tonslawsky said, I just need proof that Albany is better for buisness than oneonta. I will call each albany n oneonta to see which ones better, if u guys can tell me also which one is better, then great. My only concern for albany is that the campus i heard looks like a prison, which is a concern to me. Likewise Oneonta’s campus looks a lot better. Im also looking to see if temperatures in Albany are colder than in Oneonta or if its not big of a difference (dats why i didnt pick any too up north like buffalo). If you guys can tell me the positives n negatives of the campus or any other info would be awesome…thanx

UAlbany is fine. It doesn’t look like a prison. It has contemporary architecture that people either like or hate. The temperatures of Albany and Oneonta are very similar, since they are only a little more than an hour apart. The Albany campus is very windy due to the architecture.

In New York, we don’t think of Buffalo as any more cold than anywhere else; just very, very snowy.

thanx for clearing that up pageturner, im from ny as well n don’t really like much of the snow

Seconding Albany and Oneonta being so close together the temps are similar. They really aren’t that far apart.

What do you consider upstate? I’m from NYC so anything above Yonkers is “upstate” to us, lol. SUNYs New Paltz and Binghamton are both ‘upstate’. Fredonia is too, and way out west. Geneseo may be a little too north for you; it’s not too far south of Buffalo but it’s also not that far north of Oneonta (it’s also out west).

Oneonta has the best campus in the SUNY system and it’s size of 6,000 seems like a good spot. At that size, you’ll see both old and new faces walking on campus. While it is remote, I’m not sure that the city of Albany offers that much more. It almost certainly offers better business internships.

Geneseo and Binghamton are both are reputed to have very strong business programs. They are both quite difficult to get into though. Binghamton has an MBA program and its weather is probably almost the same as Oneonta’s (1 hour away.) Geneseo is much further northwest and in the middle of the snow belt.

Which one should I go to for accounting?
I am NOT into the party scene, so that’s why i’m worried about going to albany :/

I’m deciding between these schools too but for different reasons. to help you out: I say Albany. Its a much bigger school and there are more things to do on/off campus than at oneonta. I’ve heard that there’s not much to do at oneonta besides party.

I applied to these as well but I chose Albany. Oneonta isn’t that well known, but Albany is. That’s very important when looking for jobs after college.

Albany is definitely better for business. I would say prestige, as well. However I’m not sure of the exact rankings. Albany is much better known and when it comes to applying for jobs after you graduate, reputability is very important. It is a party school, but it’s very big at the same time. Therefore it’s easily avoidable. Oneonta is a party school as well but it’s much smaller so it’s less easily avoidable.
