Recommender submitted a great letter with the wrong college name!

Hey guys. So I am planning on transferring in the Fall. One of the schools I’m applying to is on the Common App. My professor used a recommendation that he used for another school without realizing it includes the name of the first school. It’s not major, he just included the name of the school in closing.
I’m kind of freaking out as the school that received the wrong letter is my top choice, but their impression of me is not going to reflect that. I know that submitted letters cannot be changed once sent, so I’m feeling horrible right now. Do I email the school? Or should I have the professor email a revised draft? They’ll see the original, so I don’t know if changing one word will help…

Thank you so much!

Don’t email the school.

You can talk with your professor about this and see what he thinks. To be honest, I expect this sort of thing happens almost as often as not, given how busy professors are.

@happymomof1 Thank you! I have a feeling he will make an offer to resend the correct letter but at this point I’m not sure it would do much good. Like you said, they probably see these kinds of errors all the time. It’s just another ounce of stress I’ll have to carry until decision day :-S

I figure it would be much worse had it been an error in my essay rather than a letter I had no part in writing. Thanks again!

@aaajones Hey… I remember you- from UF, right? What’s got you trying to transfer?

@AGoodFloridian It’s a combination of a lot of things (size, atmosphere, etc) that made me decide to transfer. I ended up looking at some small LAC’s that I fell in love with. I just wish I had applied to smaller schools back in high school, but I was so stubborn about UF that it probably wouldn’t have mattered anyway.

It’s crazy that you remember me, I never thought I’d be back on here after I started college haha

I don’t think that this is a problem.

If you had used the wrong university name then I would be only a little bit concerned.

However, if I understand this correctly this isn’t your mistake, it is a minor mistake by someone who is giving you a recommendation. If admissions notices this, then they will think that someone who was giving you a recommendation is a bit absent minded. I am very confident that every university student knows someone who is a bit absent minded (such as perhaps half of their professors).

“I figure it would be much worse had it been an error in my essay rather than a letter I had no part in writing.”

Exactly. This is not your mistake, and as such does not reflect on your abilities at all.
