reconsider application?

My daughter applied to Pitt (College of Arts and Sciences) back in October and subsequently submitted her mid-year grades, as requested. Much to her dismay, she recently received an email that she was not admitted to main campus, but instead was admitted to Pittsburgh at Johnstown. We are familiar with UPJ- I grew up in the area and my daughter did a little research before beginning the application process. She is not interested in attending UPJ at this point.

Her SAT score is 1290 (630 Verbal, 660 Math) and after mid year grades her GPA is 93.92 weighted and 91.26 unweighted from an academically competitive high school. She definitely has shown an upward trend every quarter, including a 97.32 average for the most recent semester.

She would like to have her application to main campus reconsidered. While I’m sure it is unlikely to render a different outcome, I was hoping to hear any advice from the folks on this board. She has called the admissions office several times during the admission process, but doesn’t know quite what to say or ask of them at this point. I will say that she applied as a Psychology major and now wishes she would have applied undecided since she probably wouldn’t continue in Psychology anyway. I welcome any thoughts or advice.

Hello!

If you would like your application to be reconsidered for the Pittsburgh campus, you may contact our office.

It is important to note that less than ten percent of those requests result in a new decision. Those that do get a new decision are accompanied with significant new academic information, such as updated SAT/ACT scores and senior year grades. If you plan to pursue reconsideration, please email oafa@pitt.edu with your request and also detail what new academic information you plan to provide. Submission of supplemental information, such a recommendation letters, will not result in a new decision.

You can view the academic profile of students offered admission to the Pittsburgh campus here:

hailtopitt1787- thank you for the prompt reply. She did not submit her ACT score at the time (a 27 composite) because we thought her SAT score was the stronger of the two. Would the submission of this ACT score be beneficial and/or considered new academic information worthy of reconsideration?

Median 50% for Dietrich is: 1160-1340(Old) and 26-31 ACT. I would recommend submitting the ACT, mostly because you have nothing to lose, but partly because the New SAT scores translate to lower Old SAT scores, which their current freshmen profiles are compiled with. A 27 yesterday == a 27 in 2010, etc. Good luck!

I appreciate your perspective and will have her submit the ACT. We have seen the median 50% stats throughout the application process and thought she fell nicely within them, although never considered the new/old SAT part. I don’t know that it will make a difference at this point, but I do wish we would have sent the ACT’s as well from the outset.
