I was recently not admitted into Rutgers New Brunswick SAS & SEBS but was admitted to RU Newark SAS with a GPA of 3.4 and SAT of 1660. I really want to go to RU New Brunswick SAS but clearly was not admitted and am wondering how I can get my app reconsidered? I have friends who got in with a 3.6 & 1630 and another friend who got in with a 3.47 & 1700 - all New Brunswick campuses. Another friend was wait-listed with 3.6 and 1610. My friend with a 3.6 & 1630 informed me that one of her friends who was rejected last year wrote a letter to the administration telling them how bad she wants to attend RU & how she is motivated to do well in school and was later accepted. At this point, I am desperate to do anything to get in and am willing to write a letter and do anything to get my app reconsidered. So I was just wondering if anyone can give me any advice or tips on what to do to help my chances of getting my app reconsidered. * I will be calling Monday to ask what the reason was for my app to be denied by the way! *
I got waitlisted with a 3.19 and a 1750. (In state)
I don’t think they will give you a reason other than “your application was not as strong as others” or something like that. This is what I found on their website about reconsideration:
Requests for reconsideration must be based upon new academic information (that was not available at the time of the original decision) and which shows a significant improvement as compared to that previously submitted-- for example, a later term grade report with a higher cumulative grade-point-average, or new SAT or ACT scores. Your request should include your full name and Rutgers ID (RUID) and be sent with the required new academic information to:
Reconsideration Committee
Office of University Undergraduate Admissions
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
65 Davidson Road, Room 202
Piscataway NJ 08854-8097
Fax: 732-445-0237
Please note that requests for reconsideration rarely result in a different decision, and requests that do not include new academic information will not be considered.
That’s so annoying. Clearly there must be another reason than “your application was not as strong as others” when my stats are almost the same as other people. I’m calling Monday & sending the letter in regardless because I’m desperate at this point!
It’s a numbers game. Unfortunate, but that’s what happens with large state institutions that receive tens of thousands of applications every year. With stats that are below the 25% range fof SATs and GPA for applicants, it’s a crap shoot.
I’m not saying don’t call, but you are more than likely not going to hear anything you want to hear.
Ask if your first semester grades will suffice as new information, especially if they show even slight improvement.
@Rhetorical13 Yeah, I’m not expecting anything huge, but at this point I’m willing to take the shot because it wouldnt hurt to try. @manchmal My midyear report grades are fine. All classes have A’s including AP Gov but a C+ in AP Bio. Rutgers requires admitted students to send in midyear transcripts either way so I’ll definitely ask if they count for rejected students.
@rutonyu they don’t require admitted students to send in mid year transcripts. Admitted students only have to send in their transcripts at the end of the school year if they decide to enroll. People who are waitlisted have to submit mid year transcripts for extra review, and that might apply to rejected students but i can’t really say I know.
@Aly310 Oh I see. Thank you for the correction. I will call tomorrow & find out!
Were you able to obtain any new information from the phone call?
I talked to the Dean and he stated that the reason my app was rejected was because my rank was below the 50% mark. I have a rank at 51%; and he said that is usually enough for an app to be rejected.
rutonyu you may want to attend a community college and then apply as a transfer.
@rualum I’m thinking of attending Monmouth University for a semester or two & apply to transfer to New Brunswick. Do you know which one would have the better chances? Of course grades also matter but I plan on working really hard so I will be able to transfer regardless if I go to Monmouth or CC.
Rutgers doesn’t care whether your go to a CC or college in NJ. A 3.5 for example will count just the same regardless of whether you went to UCC, Brookdale, Monmouth, Montclair, etc. Go to a CC, do as well as you can, then apply for transfer. You’ll save money and still end up with the same Rutgers degree that everyone who goes there for four years gets. Just make sure that your get the best grades your can and you will be fine.
Bumping this.
I applied as a transfer student for the Fall and was rejected with a 3.5, after this semester I’ll have a 3.7… is it worth contacting the dean at all? If so, rutonyu- who did you contact?
@rutonyu My advisement to you would to go to Monmouth University. Rutgers definitely looks at where you go to school as a transfer students. I go to Ramapo and was accepted as a transfer, my friends at sussex who have better gpa’s at sussex were rejected. Also at Monmouth the classes will be harder then at the community college which will get you more ready for Rutgers.
@abbzter I contacted the undergrad admissions office & they took my name and number and I believe the Chancellor contacted me back and explained the whole situation about why I was rejected (which is a ridiculous reason about my rank being below 50% percentile). I think if you write a letter & explain that you are REALLY interested in attending RU may help more than just calling.
@Hockeydad223 Yeah, I actually really like Monmouth now and may actually stay there for all four years. I may still apply to RU as a transfer and see how a semester goes and take it from there.
@Hockeydad223 Also, I’m curious whether you got accepted to RU Newark or New Brunswick?
@rutonyu That is exactly what I did with Ramapo, ended up not liking it which is why i’m transferring to Rutgers. I got into Rutgers New Brunswick and attending Fall 2015.
I can’t speak to the reconsideration part – but wanted to add that my daughter was deferred, and then wait listed last year – for Rutgers, New Brunswick SAS. She was very disappointed, chose to attend an out of state school, and was just admitted as a transfer to Rutgers, New Brunwick SAS for September 2015. She had a 3.3 gpa for both hs and freshman year of college. I want to stress that it is considerably easier to be admitted as a transfer, she and at least five friends have all been admitted to the New Brunswick campus for 2015. In hindsight – because she (we!) are at risk of not having some of these credits transfer, we probably should have given more thought to attending Rutgers, Newark (where she was admitted) last year and then tried for a school-to-school transfer.
