Once again, William and Mary continues to be the most selective public institution in America as the record for applications is broken for the second time in three years.

Oh no, guess there's no chance of my daughter getting in with this.

My daughter didn't apply to UVa last year, but she did apply to VaTech and was not accepted. It was a little bit of a surprise because I'm a Hokie grad. Her SAT was only 1200 and GPA was a 3.5. She was however, extremely involved in high school (lots of leadership positions and community service) and is also very involved at the University of Maryland now. She made the Dean's List (has a 3.65 gpa) in the fall and wants to transfer back to Virginia at either UVa, VaTech or William & Mary. Will her EC's help the fact that she didn't have a good SAT score or excellent gpa? And is her current gpa high enough to get her in? She wants to major in Political Science and says she can get some very good recommendations.

My son was accepted out-of-state last year, but the tuition was much higher than his other schools, so he selected another. It was one of his favorties, though. There is a lot of interest out-of-state. I have a cousin who is there right now. If you are in-state, it is quite the bargain.

Curious..my bro was a Hokie, but I'm a Cavalier. :)

That's impressive, but I'm guessing that the "most selective public institution in America" is probably UCLA, with over 43,000 freshman applicants, from which they admit about 9,000. It's a different scale, but I'd guess the Bruins win the bragging rights for "most selective public institution", unless somebody can come up with a better candidate and/or different analysis...

texastaximom - What year did he graduate? I graduated in 1980. What do you think my daughter's chances are? She was class officer several years in a row and student body president her senior year. Now she's an ambassador at UMD and president of the student council for one of the programs of study.

My brother graduated in 88, I graduated in 85.

I wish I could help you on chances, but I think a crystal ball would be more accurate. You just never seem to know what it is that makes one applicant an admit and another a waitlist or rejection. I have no experience with transfer students. She sounds like a wonderful student.

Most of the military academies are well more selective than UCLA. And there are lots of community college nursing programs that are more selective as well.

You may well be right, but how do you find out how many applicants there were to the service academies, and their qualifications? I guess "selective" is an ambiguous term.....

Princeton Review has the data. It is likely that the average military academy applicant is in better physical shape than the average W&M one. Other than that, who knows?

As for the community college nursing programs, start with Middlesex Community College in Beverly, Mass., and South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Washington. In the later case, you need a GPA of 3.9375 in a year of college pre-reqs to even be considered in the mix (and it doesn't matter if those pre-reqs are taken at Princeton.)

I only know a few people who have tried to transfer, but from what I've heard there's a better chance of transfering to UVA from a "worse" school. Say, you have a better chance coming from VCU than W&M or Tech. I don't know why, maybe just their philosophy. It's easier to get the 4.0 at a "worse" school, and I think the GPA has to be pretty high for UVA. I think she has a good shot at VTech... I have no idea about W&M transfers...
