Applications are up this year. Read the whole story in The Amherst Student. Go to the college website, Student Publications. Good luck to everyone who applied!!!

Oh no. This is the fourth college I applied to that has a record number of apps.

this is getting a bit annoying isnt it?

agreed. i think its kind of dumb that people are making such a big deal of it. yes colleges are receiving record numbers of applications. why? because more and more people are going to college.

and yes, colleges aren't really admitting that many more students which means more competition...obviously

but there is nothing you can do about it... so chill

....i meant the record number of applications part :-p but youre right, nothing we can do now 'cept chillax

i didnt mean to sound angry-faced.

i apologize

We are also approaching the maxima of the baby boomlet. I believe there are two or three more years of increase before the boomer's progeny level off. I would thus expect further increases in applications in the next few years.

Addtionally, the almost universal adoption of the common app, make it relatively easy to apply to more colleges. Students that want to attend the most selective schools know that acceptances are unpredictable and thus apply to more schools than applicants in the past which, in turn, push the applications up and acceptance rates down, unfortunately.

pmyen is correct its what sociologists are calling 'echo-booms'

but i think it also has to do largely with the fact that more and more kids feel they have to go to college after high school.

And more and more feel that they have to go to the elites. Years ago, only the rich applied to the elites. Now, with FA, kids who wouldn't have even considered it are applying and waiting to see if they are accepted, and what the FA package will be like.

well, I'm an international student, so it is bad news for me, I'm not exactly chilling, but I'm not angry about it, just um... disappointed.
