Record Number of Applications at NU

Northeastern received just under 38,000 applications this year, up from 34,000 last year and 36,000 the year before that.

What is the acceptance rate?

According to College Board 41%.

The 41% acceptance rate was for last year when they only had 34,000 applications. My guess is it will be much lower this year as the freshman class is frozen at 2800 students.

I’m not used to the ‘accepted’ terminology. Does it mean admitted or enrolled ?

My daughter is considering NEU, and so I have been poking around it’s webpages. Is there any validity to my impression that it is a couple of rather distinct colleges rolled into one ? I think I can identify a traditional LAC streak, a university type streak, and their ‘professional’ college which seems very vocational, and somewhat diploma-mill’ish – or so my cynical side whispers.

Accepted means admitted.

Large universities typically consist of multiple colleges. Schools like Penn, Cornell, etc, are like this; it is not unique to NEU. They aren’t separate institutions, but rather different divisions within the school.

The College of Professional Studies is designed more for working professionals that don’t wish to take time off to go back to school, and doesn’t impact the typical NEU student much. The CPS isn’t unusual, even Harvard has some form of distance education through its extension program.

The only thing extremely different about Northeastern that you should look into is its co-op program. I’m not going to go much into detail about it; there should be enough information about it on its website.

Calculates to a 20% yield. Anybody know how that compares to peer schools ?

Just found a great website: my chances dot net.

Yield Rates 2008:
Northeastern 23.2
BU 20.9
BC 26.8
Tufts 32.5
Syracuse 27.5
