UIUC’s acceptance rate has been always high. Maryland’s SAT scores were not better than UIUC’s this year. UIUC had average of 1295, while Maryland’s average was 1275. UIUC purposefully discourages weak applicants, and the applicant pool tends to be self-selective.

What? Does the view book say, “Losers need not apply?” Having grown up in central Illinois, UIUC (which we always called the U of I and locals still do!!) was considered a “tough” school. However, a 69% admit rate vs. UMD’s 39% admit rate?

Illinois publishes a chart of middle 50% ranges in class rank and test scores for each college and purposefully discourages weak applicants. Applicants that does not fall within the range usually do not apply. This is why despite 69% acceptance rate, UIUC’s student body is able to boast SAT average of 1295.

BTW, I am not even sure why UIUC is brought up in this conversation. Is the OP trying to claim UMCP is a superior institution because the acceptance rate is lower?

sang54 - How did you arrive at those average SAT numbers?

From UMD website:
For the Fall of 2009, students admitted to the University of Maryland have an average (weighted) GPA of 3.98 and the middle 50% of SAT scores ranged from 1240 to 1390, and between 28-31 on the ACT. As a result 25% of the admitted students scored below a 1240 on the SAT and 25% scored above a 1390.

Those UMCP stats are highly misleading. They refer to admitted students not enrolled students. A safety school that accepts a bunch of high level students that don’t enroll is still a safety school.
