so i go to a good private school with a nation wide reputation. freshman year i took earth science and honors alg I (classes freshman req. to start with) and got a 3.8 cum. sophomore yr, i tried taking too many honors and aps and i ended up dropping out of ap euro. the first semester i got a 3.0. this was from a culmination of depression, suicidal thoughts, bulimia, getting suspended (w/o missing school and bc of not serving detentions), problem with parents marriage, and my dying grandmother. i was also admitted into a psych ward. i'm in my 2nd semester and im still dealing with these problems and i'm prob still going to get a 3.0. if i get a 4.0+ jr year and about 1900+ on my sats, could i still get into berkeley, georgetown, or maybe attempt an stanford? if not, how can i improve the rest of my high school years? im thinking of pre-law...

ps. (really good ec: interning at law firm, volunteering at church, asb, etc...)

I don’t know about GTown and Stanford because you are far away, being a sophomore, from a proper chance thread. I think your chances are pretty much cut due to the gpa hit. Also, my cousin goes to Stanford and one of her friends talked to a Stanford counselor about some suicide related topic and Stanford dismissed her as a student as they didn’t want anyone to even thinking about committing suicide on campus. A few students every year are kicked out of Stanford through this method. For Berkeley, I would like to say that it is a complete numbers game. Get your SAT up around 2200 and your GPA around a 4.2 cum and you should be fine for Cal. The way Cal works is that it multiplies your GPA by your SAT. So try to keep those up. Don’t forget about good extracurriculars! Good luck.

im not even sure if i should mention it to the colleges, but that would kind of be my reason for my soph grades. if i do, im going to focus more into how i overcame it. but thanks! and would these be enough ecs?

FRESHMAN YEAR:
-freshman president of earth club
-culinary arts club
-asb senator
-key club

SOPH YR:
-really active in key club
-asb commissioner

and im planning to start maybe a UNICEF club this yr or the next. would that be enough? and do you have any suggestions to help me get into cal? :)

Oh wow, we’re actually very similar. I went through a lot of the same things and got a GPA hit as well… PM me. :)

The schools you listed are already reaches, so it will be difficult. Definitely bring your SAR scores up. I don’t know what grades you received, but is there any way you could retake one of the classes? A lot of schools have policies in place that if you get a D (or sometimes C) in a class, if you retake it at the same school, it’ll replace the original grade. Ask your school counselor about that.

i talked to my counselor and i can’t retake any classes. considering everything from above, do you think i have a good chance at nyu?

Look, calm down. How high can you get your GPA by your senior year, and how high will you score on your ACT/SAT? That’s what will determine where you get in, and you don’t know any of those numbers yet. Chill and do what you can now to mitigate the damage. It sounds to me like your academic worries are adding to your stress, which makes this concern for your college prospects self defeating. Go be a high schooler for a couple more years, jeez.
