Recreation, Parks, and tourism administration

What is the RPTA major like at Calpoly? I’m a junior in high school right now and so I’ve really been into the process of figuring out what I want to do with my future, and with all the careers i’d been considering, the thought of “would I be able to travel?” was always my first concern.

I’m a California local so when I was looking through cal poly’s website I found the RPTA department and I feel this is the perfect area for me to go into. Travel has always been something I love, and so why not work in the industry and be able to do it myself?

Is the program a lot of hands on? What are the classes like? If lets say I wanted to become a tour guide for an adventure travel company, would outdoor, adventure, and resource be the best fit for a concentration, or would tourism planning and management? What is the selectivity of the program? Thank you so much!

I don’t know a ton about the program, since it’s not my major, but I know that it is accredited and that a lot of the students in the major are very social and like to have fun…if you get what I mean. I’ve had a few classes with RPTA majors since some of their support classes happen to be my major classes. From what I’ve heard, some of the classes can be pretty laid back, which is nice I suppose.
