Recruited Athlete Chances

How much does being a recruited athlete (non-revenue sport) change things? My son is interested in several schools. He is a rising junior and attends a very rigorous boarding prep school (no 4.0 grads in 3 years from this school). Son is interested in Dartmouth, Holy Cross, Notre Dame, BC....to name a few of the most selective schools on his list. He has a list of about 40 schools right now because of his sport.

His stats so far:

GPA: 3.4 unweighted....school does not rank, but this will easily put him in the top 20 percent (my older son got into Lehigh with a 3.1 from this school....and no hook)

PSAT as sophomore 186 (not SAT or ACT yet)

School does not offer honors humanities or English courses. All are considered "honor level". AP English not allowed until senior year. He will take AP Spanish and AP US History this year, AP English Literature, AP Calc, AP Bio and maybe AP Chem as a senior. He will also be taking Arabic. Other courses include Honors Algebra II, Honors PreCalc, Honors Spanish II, III, IV.

He is a peer mediator, an active member of our UCC Youth Group, spent a week in Grenada for a community service trip, was a member of a student delegation to South Africa with a select group from his humanities class, and volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I imagine he will add to his EC's this year as he is hoping to be nominated as a student leader. In addition to his sport he is being recruited for, he plays two other Varsity sports at his school and was the only freshman to make the team for both. He will be captaining his main sport this season.

Thoughts?

The college counseling office at his school can tell him way better than we can what it takes from his school. Of course first, he’ll need real interest from coaches. After that there is a formula they use which takes GPA and SAT scores and yields a number. There is a minimum number from each school.

From what I’ve seen at Dartmouth, they recruit for non revenue sports along with the others and give a similar break.

Just curious, what sport is he playing?

Interest has already been expressed (we just can’t get “official” correspondence until after September 1). I know about the AI; I was just wondering how much leeway schools usually give with non-revenue sports (soccer in this case). I suppose if he was at his public school his GPA would be at least 3.7 (academics extremely rigorous at his current school). I am wondering if they “retool” the GPA to reflect a schools profile.

it depends on the sport. football/basketball, they’ll take a star with a 2.5. golf or tennis, they’ll take a 3.0

I know a kid who went to dartmouth because he was a very good lacrosse player. He had about a 3.4 gpa
