What counts as a recruited athlete? I am a very good soccer player and am applying to Harvard, Yale, Princeton. In the common app activities section, I have one activity for club soccer and one for High school. I listed all of the awards we have won for club such as state champs, and individual awards such as first team all area. I checked that u plan to do activity in college. I do want to play. Will it help me get into those top college? I have gotten D1 scholarships from local schools but I do not want to go there. I have not had contact with the coaches. I jut want to know if the awards and top club team will help me get accepted so I can play.

I’m in a similar situation. I play tennis, but I’m not good enough to play DI though. I know you can try to walk on to the team but usually the best players have already been recruited by coaches.

I know ivies cannot give out scholarships, but they can still recruit. I just want to help my chances more since I’m going to play

You cannot get recruited by simply filling out paperwork. You have to contact the coach for the sport at the school where you would like to play. You will need to invite the coach to watch you play. The coach will contact you back if (s)he is interested. You will need to have significant contact (including emails, visits) in order to be recruited as a Div 1 athlete.

NCAA definition of a recruited athlete:

A prospect is considered a recruited athlete if the college takes one of the following actions:

Provide the prospect with an official visit.

Have an off-campus contact with the prospect or the prospect’s parents or legal guardians.

Offer the prospect a National Letter of Intent or an athletic scholarship agreement.

Initiate a telephone conversation with the prospect or his parents or legal guardians more than one time.

So just because you play a sport, regardless of what level, you are not a recruited athlete. Also, even significant contact with a coach doesn’t qualify you as a recruited athlete, unless you meet one of the above criteria.
