Recruited by Yale?

I received several phone calls in early July, and sent my transcripts in early. I am taking the ACT tomorrow and he said to give them to him as soon as I receive them for a pre-read. He already said my transcript looked good, and if the ACT scores will be where he says he needs them (30+), then we can schedule an official visit.

So, several questions:
Does an OV this early mean that I am on top of his list? I have received a phone call every two weeks roughly, and he said he will be calling every week to stay updated, and that kind of thing.

Also, what are the chances of him offering a likely letter provided I seem like a good fit with the team when I go on the OV?

In addition, how is being a 2nd generation legacy affect the admissions for a student athlete?

I am just very apprehensive about this because Yale has been my #1 choice for a long time, and I do not want to screw anything up. Thanks in advance!!

These questions are basically what I asked on CC just yesterday. From what I’m hearing, yes, early OV generally means that the coach is very interested in you, especially when he’s calling you so often. (So jealous, still waiting for Yale’s call…the only school left…don’t know what to do…haha) Congrats and good luck!

Im going with yes. Im a recruit to Yale, and my recruiting experience was fast and fierce. I was a late recruit (November of my senior year). So, if you are getting talks of an official then I would say yes, yes yes they are interested in you. As well, Im assuming youre a high jumper (based on the name?), if you get yourself down here for a visit (good luck on the ACTs!), I will likely be meeting you!

Yes, you can have talks of a LL on the official - I did. If youre a good fit for the team and you like the school, the coach can talk about you applying early (as in like… 3 weeks after your official; I know a recruit who applied and got a LL in Oct of his senior year).

Not sure how being a second generation helps with admissions… I know a few people here who literally have a double or triple legacy to Yale, and when they applied Yale said it didnt hold THAT much weight, since they were applying you as a person, not your grandparents or parents accomplishments.

And Jumper101… have you tried simply emailing the coaches? They are people too haha, and if you write a professional-yet-direct message expressing your interest in Yale, it might help. Worst that can happen is they dont reply right?

I am really curious, what are your PRs? I’m assuming you’re both high jumpers. If you’re ot comfortable sharing, then can you just give me a range? Thanks :)

^I’m not a high jumper. I’m guessing 1.67 meters does the trick.

Guy: I think I’ve given the Yale coach enough emails for a lifetime lol.
“Worst that can happen is they don’t reply” Perfect, check.

Maybe November is the magic month but I might commit to a school before then…

thatguy100: I took the ACT today and feel very confident. I called Coach Davis this afternoon and he told me to call him as soon as I see my scores online so we can (hopefully) set up an OV. And Yale is absolutely my number one choice, so I will think of a way of conveying that information to him without sounding too pushy. In other words, if he asked me to commit on the OV, I would jump on it in a second.

And I am indeed a high jumper! If I get the OV scheduled, I will definitely message you my name so we can meet up!

i0p3de: My PR is 6’6", but going for 6’10" this year. We’ll see though. But don’t think this is the cut off for an Ivy. I probably could have jumped lower heights and still generated a lot of interest, however I am more interested in academics than going to an extremely competitive Track school. Good luck with everything!

jump: you’re in if you get a 30+

the yale coach will not BS you. And he will not bring you to an OV if he hasn’t already gotten the nod from admissions. However, you still need to do an outstanding job on the application and on your senior year grades.

congrats!

^^^Correction: 1.67m for girls lol not boys. Guy in my state went to Harvard with a 6’10" jump :)

Agreed with pacheight. I was specifically told on my official that they dont offer visits unless they have sent some things to admissions and admissions has said you are infact an athlete who stands a chance of getting in.

Hopefully see you at Yale, glad to hear its your first choice and I hope your official comes to fruition and is a great time @jumphigh

haha yeah, i figured 1.67 was for girls.

jumphigh- thanks and good luck with 6’10"!

Thanks everyone for the help! These will be the longest two weeks of my life-waiting for the ACT scores.

bites nails

Well, I ended up scoring a 32 on the ACT, and the OV has been planned! Thanks everyone for the information!!

Congratulations Jumphigh! Have a great time on your official visit. When are you going?

Thank you!! I leave on the 9th in the morning, and come back the twelfth, so I’m definitely utilizing all 48 hours!

Well, best of luck to you. I’ll be thinking about you and sending positive vibes your way!

Congrats! And good luck on the visit! Let us know how it goes …

Thanks guys!! And fishy, I’m thinking about your daughter and hope she has an incredible experience!!
