Recruiting for economics major

Could any JHU graduate or current JHU student help me with these questions? I am thinking about applying to JHU as an economics major. How is the career services at JHU and do a lot of financial firms recruit there? Also, do a lot of NYC firms recruit there or are the firms primarily from the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area? In addition, is it easy to obtain an internship for the summer with a financial firm?

I would greatly appreciate any information on this.

The Career Center site has a lot of helpful information. This link has information about career/recruiting fairs and you can look through the lists of employers who come to Hopkins: [Career Fairs](http://www.jhu.edu/careers/students/ApplyforOpportunities/careerfairs.html)

Also, there are a number of students through Hopkins Interactive who can answer questions about studying economics at Hopkins and opportunities available:

Freshman econ major here. Personally, I am probably not going into finance, but I know several people who are shooting for that path. To put it bluntly, Hopkins finance recruiting is not spectacular (it is probably one of the strongest schools academically that does not place well into finance). That said, the new center for financial economics and recent efforts by the administration has improved the situation quite a bit. Several firms came here in the fall, and there are resume drops on the Jconnect website (BAML, Citi, GS, etc.)

If you are dead set on finance, I don’t think Hopkins would be a great choice. Going to an undergraduate business school or an Ivy institution would probably be better if that is your goal (Wall Street loves prestige). However, plenty of people here do go into finance, and there are alumni at every major bank.

Conclusion: If you want it, you can do it. Hopkins will not hold you back. Recruiters will very much respect the school. However, you will have to network yourself and get out there. It will not be as easy as a place like Harvard/Wharton.

bleedblue12345. Thank you for your reply. What industry do most people majoring in economics enter into after JHU?

A lot of people go into consulting/law, but a fair amount do go into finance. Also some people go onto further academic work (Phd, etc.)

Here’s the career center posting: http://www.jhu.edu/careers/students/explore/majors/gradsurveys/economics_2005-2008.pdf

Like I said plenty do go into finance, but the recruiting here is just not as heavy as other schools (unfortunately or fortunately).

I graduated last year. I know of a few people that got very nice finance jobs (GS IBanking and MS S&T) but both of them had contacts. As pointed out above, finance recruiting here isn’t as big as at other places, particularly those with top-ranked business schools. Personally, I’m in a PhD program for econ (but in contrst to what was said above, that’s not a particularly common route).

Thanks bleedblue12345 and YanksDolphins for your information. One last set of questions. I have heard a lot about how tough it is to get good grades at JHU. What do most of the economics classes curve out to be for the average student at JHU? Is it a B or C? How hard is it to get an A or a B+?

If you’re good at economics, A’s are easy :). Most professors set the mean probably somewhere around a B.
