Recruiting from Smeal...seniors, recent grads?

My nephew will graduate from Smeal in May, with honors, over 3.5, (I believe almost 3.7). Finance is the major.

So far he's blanketed the internet with applications, has had some phone interviews, but nothing concrete yet. He didn't have a summer internship (worked at a law office). Some of his friends with the highest gpas have great jobs in NYC etc lined up for a while now.

How competitive is the job market for Smeal grads? Is this a good year? I'd assume there's a lot of on-campus recruiting? Is not having an internship a big strike against him? Basically, how's it going for those in the hunt for jobs?

He's loved Penn State and is sad to leave.

Senior finance major I know has a good job lined up. High 3s GPA but had two internships (summers after soph and junior year). Internships REALLY help.
My s is at PSU and is having no luck getting a summer internship for after his second year - very little interest unless you're a junior and the opportunities are hard to get. He'll study abroad this summer instead.
I would think the current economic conditions will begin to make it tougher for everyone - except for those tippy top kids who can always write their own tickets.
