Hey I'm a junior in high school and I'm wondering how sports recruiting works at Williams especially for track and field. If I understand correctly each coach has around 3 "tips" but if the coach doesn't tip me, but is he still able to talk to admissions and influence their decisions? Also if he helps me gain admission, does that mean that I'm committed to the team for 4 years? I haven't contacted the coach yet, but I plan to do so over summer when track seasons over. Is anyone here familiar with how recruiting works in LACs?

coaches don't have "tips." They used to, but they really don't have them anymore. they can be "suggestive" but there are still many times where a coaches athlete is rejected. The Board of Trustees is actually trying to lessen the reputation of Williams as a jock school.

We are also DIV. III, so recruiting here isn't that glamorous.

Coaches still have tips; the number of tips varies depending on the team. I'm not sure how many the track team gets but my impression is that the track team is one of the higher stat teams. Do a search here on CC and you'll find lots of information/discussion about athletic recruiting/admissions at Williams and other NESCAC schools.

Thanks guys, lol I understand it's DIII, but I didn't know of any other words to use. Does anyone know if you have to be on the team for all 4 years if the coach helps you get in?

There are, I believe, 66 tips per school as agreed upon by NESCAC. They can be used as the athletic dept desires, so no fixed amount per team. At Williams which has a larger student body than Amherst, for example, and fields more teams, they get spread around more. Generally you might imagine that football and hockey get more than tennis or squash. The minimum sat, even for a tip, is around 1300-1350 and for schools like Williams that rank apps 1-9, with 1 the best, then 4 or 5 would be about the lowest that might still be able to get in (a low band admit). The coaches also have 32 protects, which means that the app gets careful review, and if the app meets the acceptance hurdles, which would place it on par with thousands of others that might be acceptable, than it could get a bump. Normally sports that are less spectator driven. Google nescac athletic tips and you will find lots of info. Alums and such from these schools are always bantering about the place of athletics in academia so there are a lot of discussions. Go on the NCAA site and click to Division III and you can read all the recruiting rules. To get a tip you would need to be an impact player likely to contribute all 4 years. Good luck.
