Required Common Application Forms - 1 Teacher Evaluation(s), School Report, Mid Year Report, Final Report, Homeschool Supplement to the Secondary School Report

If a school i am applying to says that. Can i also throw in a counsler rec if i know it will be very good?

well each school has its own requirements in addition to the common app, if i'm not mistaken. i know for stanford, you need TWO teacher recs.

question: do "teacher recs" also include counselor evaluations?
also, are we allowed to send them FOR our teachers? so we can get to read them...

thanks for stealing my post drsarah, but can we go back to my question please.

If we are applying to a school via common app we just need to base our recs by what the common app says for each school correct? So if it says one teacher eval, that means we need one teacher eval for sure.

If it does say one teacher eval, can we submit more? For example a counsler eval?

most schools require that you send in a counselor recommendation--that is usually a part of the school report, if i'm not mistaken. so you wouldn't be sending in an extra rec, just a required one.

Canes12,
I'm sure that there are varying opinions on this. Here's a link you might want to look at.

The Secondary School Report of the common app is filled out by your guidance counselor and includes a space for evaluation ("Please write whatever you think is important about this student, including a description of academic, extracurricular, and personal characteristics. We welcome a broad-based assessment that will help us to differentiate this student from others. Feel free to attach an additional sheet or another reference you may have prepared on behalf of this student.") So your GC will have an opportunity to recommend you without sending anything extra.

drsarah, yes, you are "allowed" to read them if your teacher gives them to you to mail. (One of my d's teachers did that since he wrote it at the end of junior year, before she had decided where to apply.) This is true even if you've "waived your rights". The waiver only means that if your teacher doesn't want to let you read it, you give up your right to DEMAND that the college give it to you.

Good clarification Chedva. Two of my d's emailed my d a copy of their recommendations even though they mailed the hard copies in themselves. Even if they send them it doesn't necessarily mean you can't see them--it's the teacher's call.

I called every college under commonapp. which I'm applying to, they say they accept the commonapp. forms, however, they would also take the school's own secondary report and recommendation letter with the school's letter head. you DO NOT have to use the commonapp. forms.

Back to Canes12's first post-- the Secondary School Report is prepared by the guidance counselor at your school. The Homeschool Supp is not required unlesss you're homeschooled. That's probably obvious, but since you included it in your list of required documents, I just thought it bore pointing out. If you're homeschooled you need both the Secondary School Report (usually filled out by a parent or homeschool supervisor) and the Homeschool Report if it's required by the individual school.
