Recs

Hi, im a freshman at NYU thinking about transferring out as sophomore and into junior year. I've started to think about recommendations, and there is one writing professor i became close with first semester. I did really well in his class, but havent really seen him around or contacted him because, well, its hard to at a school like NYU. Do you guys think a recommendation from my first semester in college be ok for a sophomore transfer? If so, when should I ask him to write it? I mean should I ask him to write it for me now when he still remembers a lot about me and my writing and hold on to that rec, or should I ask when I come back from summer. Thanks.

Yes, it is fine to ask him and I would ask him now when you and your work are fresh in his mind. He can decide the timing of when he will actually write it, but it is better to ask him now, imo.

Ask him, also, what would be helpful for him. Would he like you to have the rec for mailing to the schools? (He would probably need to provide you several copies on Department letterhead and, ideally, Dept. envelopes. Or have you provide stamped envelopes next year closer to the deadlines?

You may find that you meet profs in the coming terms that you would rather use, but this can be an additional rec. Or maybe you won't use it, but that's ok.

If you are going into any type of writing-intensive field, I think such a prof is a good one for a rec.

hey the unc app doesn't say anything about recs so I didn't do one... It said you only need one as a high school senior applying. Should I still get one?
