Reculant profs and recs

Okay... I talked to my favorite professor about transferring and asked him to write a rec for me since I have confidence in him.

Ouch, I thought after I left the room. He did not hear me say Cornell, only Colgate and seemed hard pressed about small campuses. Said that he would write a good recommendation letter.

I do not think I've convinced him enough so I am writing a letter since I argue better that way.

But I have heard from other people at my college that professors are the hardest people to talk to about transferring. I definitely know that my other favorite prof will not write one sincerely since she is an alum of the college. But the other two, I did okay with them but just do not know me as well as the other two.

My question is... how do you deal with professors when it comes to asking for a faculty report for transferring, particularly the ones who want you to stay or at least have you go to a similar campus?

I am having second thoughts about this guy, really. It was so hard for me to talk to him because I like him so much... but can I really trust him to be sincere in his letter? I know that he has already written a reference letter for my summer internship and I am positive that it's a kick-ass one.

try to avoid profs that you are unsure they will deliver 100% in their rec. but if it comes down to them, just ask them sincerely- 100% honesty.

Is reculant a word?

........no

reluctant.

reluctant.

reluctant.

Bad spelling, my bad.

Not exactly... but he certainly doesn't want me to go! But he says if I'm confident that I'll be happier there, then he will try to support me.

Then he goes into a rant on campus sizes. Obviously he did not hear me say that Cornell is one of my choices and we only talked about this other small LAC.

Oops. Definitely not the guy to ask for a Cornell ref no matter how much I like him. This is going to be tough to get at least one or two prof references for Cornell around here- profs here really advocate for small campuses. Already got one from my admissions reader (we're good friends now). But I'm going to hold off this transfer-to-Cornell talk for a couple of weeks until I've talked to more people. The other school's a-go. Dammit, seeing that that prof face-to-face made this process much harder! I can leave everything here but not him. ARGH!
