Recycling essay?

While it’s really nice to read about campus & questions from class of 2011 and parents, I am over here getting more and more nervous about applying to UNC! Words can not express how much I want to fast forward to the decision letter! But for now, I’m intent on making everything on my app as close to perfect as possible, so I’ve got a tiny question for you all.

As you probably know, UNC offers a selection of 8 essays and directs applicants to choose two from the bank, writing one short response and one longer response. Option number 8, as you also probably know, is as follows:

If you have written an essay for another school’s application that you really like, feel free to use it as your longer essay for us. Please be sure to tell us (a) what essay you are answering and (b) why you think this essay represents you well (your explanation will not be included in the essay word count).

I’ve written a 500 word essay for the common app that, should I go the route of convenience, I would like to submit to UNC as my longer response. But here’s my question…would it be more beneficial/express stronger interest if I selected two UNC-specific essays? I see that UNC says if I’ve written another essay that I -really like- I can go with it…i.e. discouraging this option?

I’m further concerned by the fact that my common app essay is on a topic of my choice, although I don’t have a reason for my concern there, haha. I just think it might look…weak or something.

Basically, yea or nay to the common app essay.

Okay, I think I’ve explained myself enough - I’ll sign off now, but before I go, I could really use some input from anyone reading. I trust your opinions, and I hope you can help!

I submitted an essay from another school's application. I got in just fine and am LOVING UNC :)

no, they dont care if you recycle essays. when a UNC rep visited my high school last year, i asked him this exact question, and he responded by saying that "everyone always asks us this question. we offer the final option of sending in a different school's essay because we want more variety in applicants' responses. it won't hurt your chances at all if you send in an essay you wrote for a different school."

My d sent an essay from another school's scholarship application, and an essay for the Pogue and her common app essay. She rec'd a likely letter from Carolina! :)

Oh, awesome! Thanks guys for the response. I'm so relieved. This is going to cut down on my application time nicely. :D

UNC doesn't accept commonapp.

No, but you can apply via their web site. They have their own online application. :)

I have a question.. (sorry for "hijacking" your thread)..

Can I extend my 150 word short answer essay about one of my ECs to a 250 word essay and send it to UNC for option #8?
I know it says that we can send it as the "long essay," but it doesn't say that it'll restrict the option to ONLY the "long essay."

I think I'm going to write my long essay on the friend prompt, but I don't really like any of the other prompts..
