Since the prompt for the Columbia supplement essay is not so specific, I have been thinking about using my Stanford essay for it. Do you think the admissions people would recognize this quickly and look down upon it? (the stanford essay is pretty easy to recognize, i think. i used the one that was to write about something someone once told me that i felt was important.)

Shouldn't be a problem, as long as the essay's good, and you replace the word Stanford with Columbia. =)

This is right. Your Why Columbia essay is the time for you to direct an essay to Columbia specifically. Your regular essay doesn't need to be specific to Columbia so long as it is good.

Why would they care...?

Because it could show a lack of interest (which I'm sure the OP does not want). . .

just to let you know, someone from the columbia adcom came to speak at a school college night thing we had (like workshop type thing) and told us that colleges sometimes get offended if they realize you're using another school's essay for their app. and for top schools, they will know what the prompts are.

There are plenty of other ways to show interest in Columbia.

They want to see a great essay that reveals something about you. If it sucks already, they might be thinking "this kid used his same crappy Stanford essay for us." But if it's good, I would stick with it.

***?

the stanford essay is like about a person you has influenced you

the WHY US columbia essay is based on 350 characters. what the hell are u all talking about. you literally CANNOT use stanford long essay for why us columbia...
there is only ONE essay for columbia and it is the following:

Write an essay which conveys to the reader a sense of who you are. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, experiences which have shaped your life, the circumstances of your upbringing, your most meaningful intellectual achievement, the way you see the world - the people in it, events great and small, everyday life - or any personal theme which appeals to your imagination. Please remember that we are concerned not only with the substance of your prose but with your writing style as well. We prefer that you limit yourself to approximately 250-500 words.

I just used my common app essay. its not specific about Columbia ... thats not what they want. the brief why us 350 characters/letters is what that's for. u COULD use ur stanford essay... but again, it wouldnt be specifically tailored for Columbia because stanford essay is about someone ELSE affecting your life etc etc

sigh someone please prove me wrong

the stanford topic can be interpreted as a subset of the columbia topic. "experiences which have shaped your life", in particular. And the Why-Columbia blurb is indeed 350 characters, but those are 350 VERY IMPORTANT characters!

But as previously mentioned, the Stanford thing had better be a knock-out essay. Stanford and Columbia are the two schools who weight the essay the most out of their peers; both are more likely to accept someone with less 'stats' and more of a 'human' picture painted for the admissions officer via the essay.
