Red Book Practice Test 5 Science Section

This morning, I took my last practice test before the test next saturday. I just have a question about the science- did anyone else find the science section on that test really hard like more so than usual? I got a 26-29 on the other red test books, but on this one i got a 22. I still got a composite 30 (35e, 30m, 32r, 22s), which is above what i need and around what I want, but that science scared me. Did I just have a bad science day? Or are there any other people out there who found the science test from red book test 5 difficult?

also sidenote haha idk if it's a good thing or a bad thing that I could do that horrible on the science and still pull a 30, the score that I wanted. Thoughts?

Just to let u know the scale in the red book is really off. On the math section of the 5th test, I got a 36 even tho I got 2 wrong. I got 8 wrong on the science but still got a 30. Usually on the ACT, 5 wrong on science is 29 sometimes even 27. I got a composite 33 on the 5th test in the red book: 32E 36M 34R 32S. I did higher on this science test than all the other 4, except #3 on which I got a 35, because of the inflated scoring. Hope that helps. Good luck Saturday… I’m taking it too.

what do you mean the scaling is off? aren’t they real past tests?
idk, but for this science test, I just found almost every passage really difficult. On the red4 test, I got a 30 in science and red 3 a 29. But for this one I got a 22, which is a BIG difference! I just want to make sure that my score on the real test will be closer to my 30 and 29 and not my 22.
Good luck to you too!

I agree, that science section felt harder than the rest. I’ve taken 4 tests in the red book (I skipped the 4th for some reason - I guess I thought I had taken it and did the 5th) and got 29, 33, 29, and 30 on the science sections. This last test wasn’t my lowest score but I had a lot more lucky guesses.

Other poster is incorrect. As you said, the red book has REAL ACT tests in it. The scale in the back of the back is the scale used when they administered the test. It does vary a lot - but that’s not because it’s inaccurate, it’s because the scores are based on percentiles. If students performed a lot better on the science section for one test, the scale is going to be harsher. Conversely, a science section where students performed poorly overall means the scale will be more generous. It’s not an inaccurate scale.

Wow…Thanks Baileyj57. That makes me feel a lot better. I was consistently getting between 31-33 composite in the red book and I thought the scaling was too generous. Makes me feel a lot better:) Crisscolfer36, if you are consistently getting a 29-30 in the red book, u will get in that range on the real test. Just keep practicing and best of luck. Sorry for the incorrect post:(

I took the 5th science section today and it was the hardest one. All of the topics were difficult to grasp, especially the one about the burning trees and needles.

Yes! I took that yesterday and got a 24! I really didn’t like that last passage…the one with the ball being projected at various heights. I also ran out of time, so I ended up guessing on the last 10-15 questions.

Test 1 missed 4 questions got 29. Test 5 missed 3 got 35. It’s all about the curve. Let’s hope we get a generous curve on Saturday!
