Red light cameras in Tallahassee

Coming to an intersection near you.

[quote]
The city of Tallahassee is planning to install cameras at several busy traffic intersections in an effort to identify those who run red lights.

If caught, a ticket will be automatically mailed to the person listed as the registered driver of the vehicle, even if the registered car owner is not driving at the time.

According to city staffers, the cameras will help promote safety and deter dangerous driving habits. They will also generate revenue because tickets are $125 per violation.

Here are the intersections that will get the cameras:

Capital Circle Northeast at Killearn Center Boulevard.

Magnolia Drive at Park Avenue

Tennessee Street at Monroe Street

North Monroe Street at East 7th Avenue

North Monroe at Tharpe Street

West Tennessee Street at North Woodward Avenue

I wonder how many parents will start having traffic tickets mailed home from the City of Tallahassee?

Folks in Tallahassee will riot when they discover what a rip these red-lights are! Other towns in Florida are making a financial killing with these revenue generators. If the city needs more money, they just tweek the clock timer on the traffic light a little.

You can bet students (their parents, actually) are a rich source of heretofore untapped red-light revenue.

Not sleeping, lizard?

LOL lizard, thats the time i was awake until last year lol

I woke up in the middle of the night this a.m., putzed around for 1/2 hr. and went back to sleep. I am an early riser up most mornings before 6–my roommate is a sound sleeper.

Ah they are killing us with fees, its bad enough TPD and FSUPD will ticket you for going 5 over, no where else I’ve ever lived do they ticket for you.

I love FSUPD but TPD is killing me, they openly break laws (turning on lights to go through red lights then turning them off, making illegal u-turns, etc). But they’re above reproach

However maybe I should get a monkey mask like this guy

What’s the leeway on this? I know I personally have “ran” a few lights if you count speeding through a yellow. If they’re busting people who blatantly run red lights, I think that’s fine, but if they’re going to bust people for going through the light just as it turns from yellow to red, that’s ridiculous and needs to be stopped.

we have them down in Naples (and soon Fort Myers). There is no leeway. In fact not stopping before turning on a red – is the most common offense.

wdglide88, so the ones in Fort Myers aren’t operational yet? I see little white cameras at some major intersections in Fort Myers, but I’ve not stopped on red before turning many times and haven’t gotten a ticket in the mail. Guess I’ve got to stop that :(.

Those aren’t red light cameras. They are there to sense when traffic is present (instead of the sensors in the ground). I believe they have to put up a sign at intersections with cameras.

They started operating red light cameras here in Lakeland a couple of months ago. Big controversy, since you don’t get the ticket in the mail until about a week later, you can rack up a lot of tickets before you know you’ve gotten the first one. Biggest offense is not stopping on the bold white line before easing out to turn right on red. Ours dont count against your license but the fees can get quite high.

$157.00
Just paid one.

I don’t think there are any of these lights in Florida other than in city limits because the state attorney ruled they are illegal, hence you won’t find them on state highways today. Apparently the municipalities are using a legal definition “loophole” to use the things. In last spring’s legislative session the state almost made them legal, but ended up not passing legislation when they got hung up on how to split up the fines with local governments! Maybe if all the legislators get tickets cruising thru Tally before they vote next spring, they will get hacked off after having to pay fines and make the things illegal everywhere, including cities that are ripping people off with the “California roll” on right jackpot.

Lizard, given your skilled writing style and mature perspective, I have a hard time seeing you as a 17 to 18 year old freshman candidate. ;)

mannnymix, turning on lights only at intersections is called a code 2 response. The police are responding to an urgent situation, but for safety reasons they only use lights when needed instead of panicking everyone by blaring the siren and lights all the time. A code 3 is for a more urgent situation, that’s when they use lights and sirens full time for a dire situation. It’s standard police procedure.

I haven’t found many in Fort Myers.

But Cape Coral, oh yes.
Cape Coral = FAIL

understand that sometimes, but not when they turn into publix afterward and park in a spot. In addition it annoys the **** out of me when they park in the fire lanes and come out with groceries. TPD can suck it

You don’t find them…they find you! Attached is a link to a zillion newspaper articles about these lights from one of the companies providing the lights to local governments. I read a few of them–one article from a few days ago stated the city of Lakeland, Fl issued over 11,500 tickets in just a four month period recently for $1,500,000 in fines. Man, I wish I could figure out a way to get a piece of this ac$ion.

LMU10, there are no red light cameras anywhere in Cape Coral, Fort Myers or Lee County.

Manny and th3vault, I don’t know of any decent sized police dept that still uses “code 2.” That is something from 15-20+ years ago. TPD is accredited. I doubt they allow code 3 responses. However, with that said, there are many actions an officer can take that appear to people as wrong. Such as getting dispatched to a “code 3” call, then getting canceled (happens daily). Or responding to a call at Publix and picking something up while u are there…

LOL! “Hey Mike. We have an emergency here. We’re out of donuts.” On go the lights, and Officer Mike races off to Publix.
