Redlands Class of 16

I was just accepted by University of Redlands a week ago and wanted to get peoples opinions on the school. My counselor recommended Redlands for me and at first i was not to interested, but after my campus visit I really liked it. Right now I am waiting for University of San Diego to get back to me. I am from WI and am looking at USD, Redlands, Arizona State, and UW-Milwaukee. I would love to hear your guys opinions about student life at Redlands as well as what you guys think about the school.

Do you have a sense of whether you’d be happier at a large school or a small one? Redlands is the smallest school on your list. Even USD is about 3 times larger than Redlands, plus it’s a Catholic school while Redlands is for the most part non-sectarian.

My son is a 2nd year student at Redlands. He didn’t have any large state schools on his list like you do. He knew he wanted a smaller school environment. He’s very happy there. He has friends who belong to a variety of social circles - athletes, psych majors, dorm friends, friends of his girlfriend, friends from FYJ (more on that in a bit) plus a few assorted guys who are in fraternities (he’s not in one). He loves living on campus although he’s getting pretty tired of the food. His first year classes were challenging and interesting. He had some difficulty getting the classes he wanted for the 2nd semester of his first year, and all the May term courses are very popular so not easy to get into. This issue goes away to a certain extent for upperclassmen since they have priority in registration.

FYJ is First Year Journey, an outdoor adventure for incoming freshmen that happens the week before orientation. This was an excellent experience for my son and created friendships that helped make the first few weeks on campus more comfortable for him.

In general my impression is that it’s a friendly campus, somewhat academically rigorous although not extremely intense. The Admissions office is excellent and can answer all questions you might have. The merit aid possibilities are also very good.

There are a variety of Facebook pages for accepted and current students - see if you can find them for more information about student life.

Congrats on your acceptance.

Thank you for your info. I go to a really small high school (60 students in my grade.) So I would love to go to a large school, but if I were to go to a smaller school, like Redlands, I wouldn’t mind that at all. I just want to make sure I am making the right decision if I do choose to go to University of Redlands. Right now University of San Diego is my first choice, but I am not sure if I will get in. I really want to go to California for college, I have family in SD and LA.
Did your son come from out of state or in state?

We live in Northern California.
