My son plays d2 mens soccer. A little confused on the redshirting g process. They are gping into the seventh game of season and he has only played 10 mins which was,in the opening day. After game 4 he sat down with coach to discuss redshirting but due to his position being overloaded he will possibly not play this after playing in 16 games and starting in 8 as a freshman. He wants to redshirt and not lose a tear of eligibility and possibly transfer I g the following semster with 3 years left…is it possible at all to get redshirt ed this year??? Looking for an answer. Thanks
I know that the NCAA has provisions for D2 soccer athlete who is injured at the beginning of a season to “medically” redshirt, provided they meet certain criteria ( I think they can not have played in more than 2 games or some percentage of the season matches, or something along those lines). I don’t know of any provisions to redshirt when there is no medical reason (for someone who has already participated in a game this season). The rules can be pretty complicated. His school should have an NCAA advisor who would be able to help him figure out his options. Good luck!
I think the NCAA has to grant the redshirt (and it is sport by sport) if you have played. Definitely worth asking the coach about it.
