In our area, teaching positions are sought after, it’s very competitive, even to teach in community college.
I don’t expect they will be raising salaries anytime soon.
The profs I know, have pretty good income going by their homes and travel plans, but that would include their outside funding as well as salary for teaching.
A very few businesses will encourage employees to finish their degree, or graduate work, but that is generally pay a % after completion, not money up front.
I teach at a small college, and one of the important perks is the tuition benefit, since the salary scale is low – and now that my daughter is applying to colleges, the question is on my mind. It’s really galling to discover 20 years later that other schools will try to poach our benefit to fund their financial aid program. It means, in effect, that my compensation package is that much lower than it seemed, not to mention that we made all our plans on the assumption that the benefit would actually be worth something.
If there’s a dollar-for-dollar reduction, I can’t see any point in asking my school to pay the benefit. And, having served on our Faculty Compensation Committee for years, I can say with confidence that if the financial aid office at any school consulted with their own faculty on this point, there’s no way they’d be allowed to pursue such a policy.
