Reduction in Grant Money - Why

@ClaremontMom

Is it first come first served for housing for upperclassmen?

Plus…what is the COA for off campus housing? Would this have affected need based aid?

Or maybe, Daughter never applied for 2nd year housing since she wanted to live off campus and told Mom that no housing was available. (From personal experience with my niece).

@thumper1 - I know nothing…I was just making a guess at what the OP might have meant when she said “the particular University she attended did not offer on-campus housing past freshman year”. It sounds like it isn’t offered at all to anyone, but maybe what she meant to say was her D didn’t get it. Gumbymom may be right though.

@ucbalumnus

Is there any UC that doesn’t have any housing for second year students?

Don’t know, although the more likely situation is that she did not win the housing lottery.

Also, some UCs have different student budgets for off campus housing because it is generally less expensive than the on campus dorms. This can result in reduced financial aid. Whether that is a net plus or minus for a given student depends on whether she found high or low cost off campus housing.

Well if this kid is a UC Davis student, room and board for off campus is about $5000 less, which could explain the reduction in aid as a sophomore.

The sibling graduating from college is likely the reason for the reduction in aid this year.

UCI/UCSB/UCR/UCSC/UCLA/UCSD and UCB show a similar reduction of $5000+ for living off campus as an Undergrad.

Because income is high, the original grant(s) were based on EFC; they weren’t Cal Grants.

The shocking part is that this wasn’t the family’s first rodeo. Unless the oldest child commuted cheaply to a local CSU or had a full ride merit, and therefore they didn’t file FAFSA the first two years, it seems that the family should have already known that EFC changes when there is one child or two.

Well…either that, or when child one was in college alone, the family income was substantially lower.

@TomSrOfBoston hit the nail on the head: If the school is given incomplete information they cannot give you an accurate answer.

Although I am certain the OP did not realize that the question was not understood in the way it was intended, I know from experience that this is often the case. Ask a question, get an answer. But the question may be more layered, and the person being asked may not realize that there are layers. I work in financial aid and see this happen all the time.

FWIW, the OP has not been on since she posted her question…

Absolutely!

Look at what happens here on CC. A person will ask a question by providing what seems to be adequate info to get a good answer, but then after several more posts, other “layers” of info come out…parents divorced, new spouse wealthy, parents own a business, student has a transcript with bad grades on it, and so forth.

It does appear that the OP may not have come back…or perhaps has opened this website and viewed while not logged in. If so, she’s not likely seeing posts that support her angst.

Sorry, it was “scholarship” monies and I never said our income was $150k. That is the cutoff to be eligible. UC Davis does not have 2nd year housing, along with UC Santa Cruz. Not sure of the rest.

Merit Scholarship, not grant. Sorry.
Our other daughter did not receive any grant or scholarship money, only loans we were eligible for.

FlipFlopGirl (OP) and AlleyOop are the same. FlipFlopGirl has been closed, but this can continue with the understanding that AlleyOop is the OP.

If it truly was a merit scholarship, there would probably be something about whether it was for all 4 years and whether it there was any requirements such as a minimum GPA to continue it. What you described in your OP sounds more like a need based grant. It’s been almost a month since your OP, have you done anything to investigate?

I’m also confused, are the parent or the student? Your username has an entry in 2014 that says you were accepted to several schools.

Notes have been sent about one person not having multiple accounts and not sharing an account. Going forward, assume AlleyOop is the parent.

this is what the UC Davis website says about scholarships

UC Davis does have 2nd year housing since my son was living in the Cuarto suite dorms 2 years ago and several of his friends lived at Arlington Farm last year. Neither is directly on campus. This is what is stated on the UC Davis housing website:

Student Housing Official Second Year Program
Student Housing guarantees second-year housing to students who lived in the residence halls for their first year (see the Freshman Housing Guarantee for full requirements). Students who elect to take advantage of the Freshman Housing Guarantee for the 2016-2017 academic year will be placed within Student Housing Apartments (SHA) at Arlington Farm. Eligible students will be prompted via email of the application process and deadlines.

According to UCSC housing website, 2nd year housing is also available.

If housing is saying something different than the websites, then that is another issue.
