I’m actually going to Reed on Thursday, and I will definitely be asking a lot of financial aid questions. I’ll be sure to report back to you guys with what I hear either that night or sometime on Friday.

SO EXCITED OH MY GOSH

Anybody have any questions they’d like me to ask? I’ll try to get them all answered!

So for the record, my financial aid email literally made me cry tears of relief. I feel like this was my real acceptance letter. See you guys next Fall!

I actually had to sit down because I got weak at the knees when I saw my financial aid, but then again that may be a sign of a more serious problem so I’ll check that out later lol

Anyway it looks like I’m going to Reed XD, unless Oberlin or Brown steals me away.

To thirdplanet: what can you share about your likes/dislikes? I was accepted and am weighing the options. Reed sounds phenomenal on paper, but then I see these reviews that make it seem like an LAC step-child. Not my view, of course, but would like to get a better picture. I do plan to visit for the acceptance days. Thanking you in advance!

Pros: very rigorous and challenging, beautiful campus, Portland is amazing, unique students, the nuclear reactor
Cons: pretentious student body, huge intro science classes, some profs are not very approachable, a little socially isolating for certain types of people, no diversity

Honestly it depends on what sort of person you are. Feel free to ask anything specific.

Thanks thirrdplanet. No offense meant by the step child reference. Just seems that Reed belongs up in the top 10 LACs, yet for some reason it isn’t and people somehow treat it as odd or off or whatever. Your pros and cons help, and I am sure every college has positives and negatives.

Reed isn’t in the “top ten” because it refuses to cooperate with USNWR’s rankings. It was ranked in the top ten LACs when the first ranking was published in 1983, but Reed questioned the credibility and has refused to cooperate since. USNews retaliated by ranking it at the bottom, and then has used information from other sources to rank Reed.
