Just thought I’d get this thread going. Any other Reed transfer hopefuls? What is your major/area of study? Why do you want to go to Reed?
Yep, trying to submit mine in the next ten days left until the extended deadline. (March 15th, just announced)
I’m pursuing a PhD in astrophysics, eventually. For now just a bachelors in Physics, hopefully at Reed!
I want to attend for several reasons…
An academic and scientific experience that at once immerses me in worldly language and enriching ethical and cultural ideas with literary diversity.
The fiercely intellectual environs and training for PhD grade thinking.
The intimacy of the lectures and small student/prof ratio.
The library. I love the brick-laden, respectful, soundless library. Reed Library > Loud PCC Students
The freespirited students’ willingness to fight the administration, and the administration’s and professor’s acceptance of such.
The student body’s response to some some very likely Pro-Trump assholes vandalizing their library with ethnic slurs - Reed colloquially posted post-it notes of tolerance and love throughout the entire library!!! <3
The incredible cafeteria.
The fantastic 12" Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope operated there.
The NUCLEAR REACTOR that I’d undoubtedly be involved with.
The single campus. No driving 90 minutes a day between campuses to make the limited selection of classes work.
The 3/2 program they have with Caltech - a school I aspire to go to.
A few stats of mine
Good:
32 y.o. Non-Trad at Portland Community College
3.74 college GPA with 100+ credits
NASA Aerospace Scholar
NASA Space Grant Recipient
Multiple PCC Foundation scholarships
NASA Astronomy Assistant (astrophysics course developer at PCC
I’ll have a rec letter from a Reed grad who’s the associate Dean of Students at my college
Phi Theta Kappa
Chartered PCC’s 1st Astronomy (President)
President of Society of Physics Students
Bad:
5 Ws (withdraws) on my transcript.
Only a few fulltime terms. Averaged ~10 credits over the past several terms.
If anyone has an insight on my likelihood of being accepted with the above info, I’d definitely appreciate it!
mjstewart, what draws you to Reed? What field are you going into?

mjstewart, what draws you to Reed? What field(s) are you going into?
You sound like a great candidate! Definitely competitive for Reed!
I’m a 26 year old English major (emphasis on writing), planning to apply to top law schools after I finish my undergrad.
Pros:
4.25 at my current institution (large public university)
2 full semesters of full-time work at this college, exceptional professor recommendations.
In addition to a full-time class load, I work one part-time job, and one full-time job, so my work week averages 70 hours BEFORE school. I also submitted a great rec from my employer
Really unique backstory
Cons:
Bad transcript from the first college I attended right out of high school - most A’s and B’s, until the semester I dropped out mid-way and had three failed classes on my transcript. The good news is, I actually had a legitimate reason for dropping out like that.
The biggest draws to Reed for me:
- Accessible professors
- Classical education style
- There is already a community of older students on campus, which is nice. I get along with 18 year olds fine, but it would be great to go to school somewhere with a few students my age as well.
- Senior thesis
- Great reputation with top law schools
- Location. I love Portland, and would love to stay on the West Coast for the rest of my undergrad. (I am applying to some LAC’s out East too, but since I hope to be on the East Coast for law school, it would be nice to stay out West for the next two years.)
Any one get a decision?
I talked to admissions yesterday and they said they postponed it. They are sending out decisions today, and they said they’ll be emailing decisions as well.
Ok thanks for letting us know. I was starting to get nevevous about not hearing back yet.
@utaprayer you are not alone. I’ve been refreshing my email all day.
Has anyone heard anything?!?
They said on their website that they’d postmark the decisions by may 1…
When I talked to them yesterday they said they postponed. Apparently they postponed again.
Anybody receive a decision yet?
Nope, no email or post mail. Then again I haven’t received any decision from other colleges I have applied to.
I asked them and they told me that today was the day. The anticipation is killing me! Haha
Rising sophomore psych major here - I got an email around 9:30pm EST indicating my acceptance! Look out for a subject header that says “This email comes in a big envelope” in your inbox. Best of luck to everyone! <3
It looks like decisions are starting to come out, and I got in? Was NOT expecting that. Is anyone planning to visit before making a decision?
@dateepsta congrats! I actually applied last year as a freshman and was waitlisted, so I visited last summer. The campus is absolutely gorgeous and Portland as a city is an awesome place too. I’d definitely recommend paying a visit if you’re able.
Is anyone else on the transfer waitlist?
Me!
@manmade @maiafenzm Any answer from them?
